My new-to-me early 80s Carver was originally delivered with what appears to be cream-colored wallpaper on the cabinet doors and drawer fronts. The photo below (not my boat) shows what I'm talking about. I want to change this out (it's peeling in some places and it's butt ugly), and I'm looking for alternatives. My initial thought was to remove the wallpaper, scrape off the residual glue, sand to a smooth surface, and paint. I understand from an aesthetic standpoint that you don't want too much wood, so something other than wood veneer would be appropriate. Has anyone else done this? What did you do?

Thanks.

To much wood makes for a lot of work. Peel, sand and paint. What boat did you get ?

We took delivery in June of 2009, so I guess I should have said "somewhat new-to-me". The boat is a 1982 Carver 3007 aft cabin with the swim platform that extends the hull an extra 2ft; twin Crusader 220hp 305cid gas engines. I'm having fun fixing her up.

I agree. Keep it simple. Unless you're re-doing everything, its easy to get carried away. New door/drawer fronts could be made fairly easily, but then you'll prob. feel the base looks outdated, and want to change that, etc, etc.

I agree dont go overboard. peel and paint.

Either: Peel and Paint...just don't let it look like paint when you're done, or...peel and install a white formica so it will be a lot less susceptible to damage.

If you lay the doors flat and after smoothing the surface well use roll and tip with vertical tipping using 100% acrylic semi gloss it will look like a factory job. Easy to spray if you are familiar with that. Alternatively you could use any of a zillion Formica pattern sheets.

Good suggestions all; thanks.

I'm going to try peeling and painting a couple of doors and see how it turns out.
