I noticed that most boat trailers are not registered with the current stickers let alone with inspection stickers(mine included) why do they require this I have no idea, there is no combustion engine associated with it, most of us use the trailer 2 times a year and the registration expires in November. So you register it in November then again in December...I find no one wants to move it without it being current because they don't want to chance a ticket. Thats NY for you....

I have had no issues registering and then inspecting my boat trailers in NY.
The trailers all have wheels and tire, running lights and many have brakes.

I register mine only because I got a ticket for unregistered a couple of years ago. Inspected? They don’t enforce it and any idiot can check if the lights work or not. NYS inspection is weak and doesn’t gaurentee a safe vehicle. Just one more way for presidential candidate Cuomo to steal my money and drive people out of the state.

I live in NY but register my boat trailer in Maine, lower price, five years, no inspection and easy.

Years ago, we used to trailer our then 18' runabout. The trailer had to be registered and inspected and the inspection sticker attached to the vertical mount near the trailer tongue. Clear shipping tape wrapped around the mount and the inspection sticker kept everything legal. The cost is minimal and the requirement still keeps some of the unsafe trailers off the road. To me, that is a small cost to not have to worry about a trailer separating on the Long island Expressway. The requirement was in effect long before Governor Cuomo became governor, so don't blame him. The NYS trailer inspection is a scam. Very superficial and proves nothing. The lack of value results in it not enforced by police agencies.

You base that on your area and your experiences - do not count on the same superficial inspections and enforcement at ramps where we are located. Similar with utility trailers and landscaper trailers. Curious to know what happens in the case of an accident in your neck of the woods?

One year the trailer inspection was a joke. The 'inspector' looked at the trailer after giving my car a real inspection and simply gave me both stickers. Most years, the mechanics checked the lights, tires, wheels, chains, and general structure before issuing a sticker. I learned the trick on mounting the sticker to the post from one of the mechanics, a man I then trusted for as long as I had the trailer. Like any other requirement, inspections can be good or bad. I'm obviously in favor of them; our lives depend on safe vehicles of all kinds on the roads we share. Hy

No inspection here and the license plates are good for life with a one time fee.
