Registerin a Dink without CoO in NYS

Has anyone done this?

I'm trying to avoid repeated trips to the DMV and I don't have the Certificate of Origin.

Essentially, this was an inflatable that was boxed for almost 20 years and was pressed into service as a tender only a few seasons so it was in great shape and I bought it...the only problem is that the prior owner had no paperwork for the boat which I know will be a problem for me when I go to register it with NY State DMV if I don't prepare properly.

Does anyone have any advice?

I had the same situation with my portabote and finally gave up and sold it because I couldn't register it.
Repeated calls to DMV they said they wanted the MSO, Manufacturing Statement of Origin.
My new in the box dink has all the papers but I still have not registered it or used it!

You can try to show up with the receipt from the prior owner, pay the tax and hope the agent accepts it but some ask for the MSO. I was told, some don't care and recognize that this document is hard to get a hold of on resales. Plus some boats are homemade, so no MSO there either.
 
Bring two things with you. A picture of the hull number affixed to the transom and a pencil shading of the same number along with the receipt.
 
Does it have an ID plate on it? I remember once having to make a copy once by rubbing a pencil on paper over it. Don't remember what else I had to do

+1 I did the same thing and it worked. Also videoed the raft with zooming in on the plate

Had the same problem, FORGET ABOUT IT!!! Sold the damn thing and bought one with papers. DMV SUCKS.
 
I think DMV is like Doctors, some are good and understanding and some just play the rulebook.
Like I said, I tried with my portabote and gave up too and sold it.
Bought one with papers but I too lazy to go register it now because I dread DMV.
They really should allow more online stuff, after all, you show up, hand them papers, they hand you back a sticker. What does showing up do unless you have to take a picture?
