Removing Carpet from Stairs

The stairs going below are a little steep and narrow. They are covered with carpeting and several of us have slipped coming down...you really have to hold on a treat it like a ladder. My wife fell down the stairs the fall and broke her arm at the wrist completely through. Required surgery, etc... I would like to modify the steps to make them safer buy it looks pretty limiting. I could, however, remove the carpet from the stairs and replace with a non-skid material. Has anyone done this...any thoughts?

On our old 27 Montego, we took the carpet off the stairs and made some cherry wood treads. They make a "silica" non skid that you can sprinkle into the varnish before it dries to give them more traction...works quite well. I'm doing this for one of our customers at work this week.

Kenny, that makes sense. I guess the wood underneath the carpet is pretty ugly. Need to recoat existing wood or rebuild with something nice. Carpet is pretty slippery...I'll look forward to getting it off and getting something safer going. Heck, I may as well change all the carpet while I'm at it. Not sure how difficult that will be.
