I have a 2001 356 motoryacht. I have a saltwater leak only when I am underway. The leak is coming from the stern where only the trim tabs are but I can't see back there. Has anyone experienced anything like this. There is no leak when the boat is not moving.

Billy,
Sounds like it may be shafts are starting to leak since you only get leaks while underway. (I am not sure what the part is called -packing/gland? - I have twin outdrives with bellows that can and will leak) If it was trim tabs, rudder seals, bellows, etc, I think you would have constant leaking all the time...be sure your batteries / bilge pumps are in good shape...my guess it is leaking as we speak, it just leaks more while running...

AJ,

Thats what I thought too, but it doesn't leak in the slip. There are holes in the hull structure between the bilge and the rudder assembly . No water comes from there. I checked as best as I could and can see no leaks at the dripless shaft seals but the water is not coming from there either. The water comes in under the dresser in the very stern of the boat only when I am underway. The hoses for the trim tabs go through a hole a few inches away. There is nothing else that I know of that is that far astern except for the trim tabs and the hydraulics for it. I'm going to go in the water this weekend to see what is going on. I'll let you all know.

Found the leak. Carver exhaust at least on my boat is thru bolted on each side of the swim platform. There are access holes above them and when I opened them up while underway I could see the water coming in. Of all the scenarios I had heard this one will be easy to fix.

Billy,
That is GREAT news, relatively inexpensive and easy-to fix repairs are one of the joys of boating

Hauled the boat today. The exhaust fitting is rubber, I thought it was metal. I unbolted it, pulled it back and squeezed 5200 in it. Bolted it back up. Problem solved.
