Satellite TV providers

They told me my current HD receiver would not work so they wanted to give me a new one. They came out, and said the sat they need to receive was at 141! After drilling 8 holes in my new roof to no avail, they said "going to have to go cable". So the installer took the new receiver back with him. Then Dish bills me 600 bucks for it to my credit card. When I call them, they tell me the guy is an independent contractor, despite the fact that Dish is billing me. I dispute the charge with The credit card company and Dish tells the card company to pound sand. I ask Dish for the info on the contractor, they refuse to give me even his name. I even send a registered and certified letter to Charley Ergen, no reponse. So I go to the PTC police. They tell me it is theft by deception in GA, and said, "do you want to fill out a complaint". I said "yes". A detective is assigned. She calls me in and says, let me call. She calls Dish hdqtrs and annonces as being from the PD and asks for Ergens office. After some exchanges, she explains a complaint has been made, a warrant will be issued and does Mr. Ergen wish to come to GA or do they need to drive to TN and extradite him out. I got my refund that day.

Charlie Ergen is a well known Scrooge and employee complaints about the way he treats even his own mangers are legendary. I refuse to feed the pig.

Sounds like you were a happy camper. Not!

Don't blame you a bit. They should have been able to point a hand held at the sky and tell you all of this without drilling a hole.

Well I say good for you Greg nobody should have to go through what you did. It's also theft by deception.

I must be the only satisfied Dish Network customer in the world. Then again I'm 100% self-install and have never dealt with sub-contractors.

Two things I don't like about Direct is.......once you leave your billing address you lose your local channels ( no biggie ). If you need mobile Tech service along the way.....you need to wait until your back at your billing address.

Last summer after being on the road 1 month....I had an issue with my Direct receiver....after a few tests over the phone they said my receiver and card stopped communicating. I needed new.....but they wouldn't send a mobile Tech from the area I was in { Tenn }....nor would they ship it until I was at my billing address. They rather I suspend service for 5 months....until I got home. GO FIGURE

Wow Don I didn't realize this was their policy. I had a similar issue all it required was removing the authentication card (a credit card sized SIM card I assume) and I wiped it clean with Alcohol then let it air dry. I never had a problem with it after doing that.
Thanks for the heads up on their repair policy.

Bill.....the tech on the phone walked me thru a series of tests....remove the card & wipe it......reset the receiver.....disconnect the sat in cable.....unplug the receiver for a few minutes and tap the power on/off......etc...... All for nothing. The receiver and the card stopped communicating ........much like me and my X . :)

I had a port leak and ruin a Dish receiver a few years ago outside of Miami. I am not under contract and I do not carry insurance. Dish offered to ship me one at retail ($200) to my billing address, which of course wouldn't work. They ended up connecting me to a local Miami installer who delivered one to me the same day for the same $200.

I'm sure there are plenty of horror stories about both companies. I've just had good luck with Dish for the past 17 years. Too bad satellite internet is so horrible or I'd give that a try.

I just don't understand why Direct offers the service for R/V's ....but then once you pull out of your driveway......your on your own. I guess they think you would spend $245K for a motorhome and just camp in your driveway !!

What Sat does Dish use....Direct is 101 ?? Maybe changing to Dish would be the solution.

Dish Network has 2 satellite "arcs": West uses 110 & 119 for most content. You'd most likely use the Eastern Arc in FL which is primarily 61.5 and 72.7. Each arc has a third satellite but that is mostly for foreign language programming. I usually just lock on to 72.7 as it has all my HD programming. My locals are on 61.5 but that is a spotbeam and only good in the Mid-Atlantic region. You should be able to get "RV, Snowbird, or Tailgater" status and receive generic network feeds. If networks aren't important to you (as they aren't for me), they you really don't have to do much. But if so you can try giving them a call. I understand that some CSRs don't know a thing about this sort of stuff, so if you hit a brick wall get a free membership at http://www.satelliteguys.us and read how to contact a DIRT member (Dish Internet Response Team). They're great to deal with.

Your satellite dish/dome would need to be Ku-band compatible for Dish Network (most are). You'd then need to re-direct the dish to lock on 110 or 119 (or 61.5/72.7).

So...sat 101 is just Direct ? I'll need to check if my dome is Ku-band compatable.
Thanks

We are still on the boat and were moving South from the Abacos to Exuma. We had the Miami locals zip plugged in using the zip for the Dinner Key marina. Somewhere along the line we lost all the locals. So I called up DTV and said I miss my NY locals can you hook me up with my old zip code? They did and now I have all the major networks back. CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC. But I do not get WPIX and PBS etc.. So down to Staniel these channels all work fine with DirecTV and an oval 3 LNB dish.
DirecTV does have some noobs working the help lines and when you get technical with them you will be in for a world of hurt. We needed to go to the 3 LNB oval to get the locals in Florida but it took MANY calls to get that out of them.

I am also a happy Dish customer.

I have the Intellian i2 and have been very happy with it. I only have one receiver on the boat that feeds 3 TV's all HD. Been using this setup for the last 5-6 years.
