Hey guys,
I am looking at traveling with a friend who is likely buying a used Viking. He is trying to fast track the deal and get it done and ready to travel by next weekend.
Not a whole lot of ocean going experience here, lots of general boating experience though. I am looking for general tips for the trip, such as are there any new hazards, is it mandatory to go inside to pass Cape Hatteras, etc...
It is a 65 footer that can travel around 20 knots.
We have both done the trip from NY Harbor up, so mainly looking for ocean travel tips.

Wait until November! Or better yet April and enjoy the trip North and not have to rush to winterize in VT.

We are talking about a guy who missed this entire season, his boat caught fire in early May and was a total loss. He has been trying to find a replacement all summer. The patience has been majorly tested, and at this time this particular boat is looking very good and getting it up here this fall is of great importance to him and his family. Jose should be gone by next weekend, we can only hope...
So Cape Hatteras appears to be the crux of this voyage, I was hoping to hear whether going inside is mandatory, or what conditions would permit passage at cruise speed.

The only choice is inside, IMHO! In a previous topic it was stated the US Navy is getting ready to sortie it's ships from Norfolk. When the Navy sorties it's ships they are getting out of port to avoid the extreme weather.
Perhaps that should influence the decision!

Hi James -

Glad to hear Dave is getting close! With the weather window closing, has he considered leaving it down south for the winter and using it there?

Well, it looks like the trip is a no go. The boat was not in good enough condition for his liking. He is going to pass. On to the next one I guess. I had no idea the market was so hot in the 55 to 65 foot size range, he has been too slow on a few that went under contract quickly, and the prices have actually gone up on these used boats over the last couple years. It seems like a sellers market right now.

If you were going to Vt. how are you going? There are clearances many boats that size cannot meet on the Champlain and Erie canals.

Dan makes an excellent point! Mechanicsville and Whitehall bridges are a little over 17 feet!

We would have taken down whatever was needed to get down under 17 feet.

Ok, seems like quite a bit of work but it can happen.
