Anybody please help.
'98 Mercruiser,B3 twin 5.7's, 450 hrs;recent purchase,about 50 hrs since I got it. Don't know when impellers were last changed.
My seawater pumps have locked when I stoped the engine.
The engines are EFI and I have about 1/2" play in the longest run of the belt between pulleys.
Temps. run 174(closed cooling) Idle rpm is about 6OO-700 RPM.
This happened a couple of times already, about 20-25 hrs apart..... after runnning the engine for no set time, and shutting off by key. Next start , the belt is squeeling. shut down quick...pull apart...the Impeller reversed in the housing.
Normally, when stopping, I return the shifter to neutral and let idle a few seconds before shutting off... this past weekend, I Unloaded the boat off the trailer, idled around and picked up my friends at the dock, idled about 3 minutes to get away from the dock, Shut down, raised my bimini, stowed stuff, then it happend when I was ready to go.
I have not noticed the engine "dieseling" at shut down, and it starts right up. All components seem to be in good shape.Impellers are not cracked, still flexible, not "Set".
However; I tried turning the pulley the correct direction (by hand) after I got it off the engine, no way. Had to take it apart. This has happened on the other engine once before. and this engine twice.
Someone told me,for whatever reason they are reversing, you should be able to reverse direction by simple turning the pulley... and that if I can't or the engine can't, the impellers are too stiff.
Anybody seen this?
