Sore thumb raftup gone wrong!! Saturday 8/28/2010

Ah, now it all makes sense, they were at "Democrat Point"...

No, on the other side of that the thumb, where it says "foul".
In my experience that is too close to opening.
I always go into the hole north of that where the "24" foot mark is.

Mike, look at the arrow, that is sore thumb, the Republican side… ;)

On the video I heard someone saying (screaming) go around the point to the guys in the water trying to get to their boats. Maybe because the rip calmed down. But to me you then would be heading out the inlet swiftly. But it seemed to have worked.

Pascal, although it has 2.4 current chart marking, I have dinked out of the cove and my 5hp heading back almost could not make it on the outgoing. A coast guard friend told me some very scary stories about people who woke up after breaking anchor at night being smashed on the rocks. Also some did not wake up... I respect that place now a lot more. A beautiful spot no doubt, but cannot let the guard down.

Here is the satellite view.
Red is where the raft up was, in my view, too close to inlet and rushing water.
Yellow is area I like to anchor in.
Black is those rocks in video.
Blue is the way out to the Atlantic Ocean!

"Pascal, although it has 2.4 current chart marking, I have dinked out of the cove and my 5hp heading back almost could not make it on the outgoing."

when i mentioned 2.4 kts current on the charts, i meant that it is not a place where you want to raft up or overnight without an anchor alarm set pretty tight! 2.4 is indeed in the "deserve respect" category!

Ok we are on the same page with that..

Thanks for the post and also glad noone got hurt. I know this area very well and not only do you have riptides because of the inlet, but in the area you were it is not protected from the wakes given off from boats, another words, it is not a 5mph zone. We normally raft up further into the cove to avoid the wakes and the current.

"I would know first hand since i was one of the idiots to jump right into the rip to try and swim to my boat as i was watching it float away."
Well, at least you learned that this was not a smart move, and I think that I might have done the same thing in you situation (acting without thinking).

It was very nice for you to share this, Lot's to be learned here.

How long were your rafted up before all went wrong?

Walter

Thanks
Walter

We were rafted for a good couple of hours before the tide started to go out and the current pick up.

I was in a raft up with 12 or so boats to watch fireworks. No currents, no weather.
The issue was that no one put out an anchor. We drifted 100 or so yards back before
anyone noticed and asked who were the anchor boats. We were already passing food
back and fourth across the boats. Every other boat had to crank up and move back
to the North and anchor.

What the video did not show you was that about 20 feet from that raft up was another line of 9 boats. Every other boat in that line had their anchor out and there were 2 stern anchors out also.

Thanks Bob from "AT LAST" for making us aware of the current when we arrived and helping us all when we anchored. We had a great day and a scary show.
