...how safe is it to swim there?

I know Jones Beach is there but is it safe to swim/tube in deeper waters of the bay?

Waters Fine... ITs the boaters you have to look out for ......

Ok. Thanks. I have been preparing my guests for the boating season, but everyone's afraid of sharks.
 
The only sharks in the bay are the ones that collect for docking at Fire Island. Oh well, I guess you have to pay to play.
 
As Rob said, the only thing you really have to worry about is the boat traffic, so finding a spot that's a little out of the way is key.

Merrick point is a good out of the way place.... Right off the dock of the landfill park.

I've been trying to look for these points on the map... cant locate them.

Tough to tube on the weekends, I had a hard time finding a quiet area with enough space to run a tube with my 21' footer, west of middle bay (Baldwin heading to Reynolds Channel) as some deep water outside the channel markers, and I even stayed near the Lido Beach golf course one day, south of the channel. I second Merrick Point. Neither offered the running space I would have liked but the guests were thrilled.

Notice in your profile that you have an '07 Bayliner 285, I own an '02 2855, great boat, never tubed with it yet! I'm in Freeport, on Hudson canal, where are you?
 
I don't know what canal am on. But I know I am near hanse Avenue. Sorry, Am new to the area. Maybe we can raft up sometime with other South Shore boaters.
 
Did they ever capture that lagoon monster who would pull people under and eat them?
Last I heard he was spotted in Freeport!

Why are the squid so large by Bergin Point, 2-3 feet, Clams the size of hubcaps? Not to mention UB-1 Shrimp. And what is the light greenish / brownish hazy slick that travels out of the cannel going across the bay. Best seen at night if you dare……
