Recently purchased a 1980 33' Carver Mariner - doing some winter projects.

The spotlight is working but the joystick will only move the spotlight one direction. Can I purchase a new control? Pulled switch/joystick out of dash and all wiring was in place. All connections looked good.
1. What are the chances of finding a new switch/joystick control for old model? (a replacement of the entire unit was much more costly than I ever expected)
2. Switch/control is sealed, can I open it and fix the joystick - seems doubtful?

I purchased a new one a few years ago for about $28. Bought it directly from the manufacturer in upstate NY. I will look at my receipts and post here.

I probably have the same spot light on my boat. On mine, it is not the switch but the clutch in the light's motor. In the spring I have to help it up and down a few times while spraying it with light oil. After that it works fine. Kind of like the mirrors on my wifes car. Hate to see you getting a new switch and having the same problem.

Thanks for the info. This link looks the closest (thanks abalmuth):

But it does not look exactly the same. There is a small dial below the joystick and light switch that I could not figure out a purpose for... it almost seems like a dimmer switch, but it has no effect on the light.

Here is a picture of the actual control. I know it is small but you can see the joystick on top, the switch in the middle and the mystery dial below the switch...

I will check the clutch as well bluedog...

Same problem or close to the same. Last year, full function. This year, light on / off only. Considering the light is close to $700 complete for 80K candlepower and considering Les has a 1 million candlepower cordless hand held for ~$20 delivered, it's a no brainer. I have both. There is absolutely no comparison. Handhelds allow you to swing the light at your desired speed v. the motor. In the river, I have come to rely on the handheld to sweep for flotsam.

I have plans for the switch if I can build what I want as the power is already there.

My 2 cents.

geomut.... you mentioned that you were looking at a receipt to a new switch that you had replaced a few years ago. Do you know the manufacturer? I’m in upstate NY so that is perfect……..

My spotlight control had similar problems. I sprayed the base of the joystick with Radio Shack Electrical Contact Cleaner and it started to work again. Since then I have been treating it periodically with Corrosion Block spray. I haven't had any problems since.

A Jabsco control will work. I replaced my light and used the old wires. Same number of wires, But I can't remember if the colors were the same or I looked at the motor wires. I made a control once using four buttons and four diotes. There's two wires per motor, the control switches the + & - for forward and reverse or up and down. The dimmer knob you asked about, is the speed control for how fast the light moves. Basicly reduces the power.

Thanks for the info.... and thanks for answering the question of the mystery dial, not sure I would have ever figured that one out.

Good responses, guys. My old 2895 had the same control. I think it is long out of production now. So you have to fit a round peg in a square hole, or something like that (LOL)... Maybe make a teak trim piece underneath it and cut the new holes so it looks nice...
