I have the following setup: There are two batteries, one deep cycle, with all accy's connected directly to it. Real rat nest at the battery. The other is a brand new (last Sunday) cranking battery. Deep cycle batt is connected to isolator at main pos, cranking battery is at aux on the isolator. Both batt's are connected to each other by neg. terminal. I'd like to be able to start on the cranking battery and run accy's off house. It seems like in my current setup, I am only using the deep cycle batt, until I use the crossover feature on the isolator.
With the crossover engaged, I have accy's, but still no power to start the boat. If I attach jump pack to aux bat, she will not start. Jump pack to main batt, it will start. Shouldn't the crossover be forcing the boat to start from the aux batt when engaged?
As stated, the aux batt is brand new. I am replacing the deep cycle with two 6v, as it is five years old. My object here is to be able to start on cranking batt, and run the house off the two 6vs
My questions are:
1. Should I install a battery sel. switch, keeping the isolator, or should I remove the isolator, keeping in mind that I will want to install a shore power panel and on-board charger at some point?
3. Is the PO-installed shorepower connection safe? There is a 30A Marinco fitting wired directly to a GFI outlet in the galley. No fuse, no panel.
Thanks for any advice. I have been doing some searching, and even went to the local Bay dealer, whose only advice was to bring it to him at $85/hour so he could trouble shoot the whole system. He estimated about $500 labor to install a charger/shorepower panel, but stressed that it was just an estimate. I don't like the guy.
