Coming from Martinez what do you recommend as the best route? Steamboat slough or Sacramento river straight to sacramento jazz fest?

I understand that the sac river deep water channel dead ends

Wayne,

I'd stick to the Sac for now, more services should you need them and it’s a bit more navigable, if you choose the Sac be sure that you do NOT cut the entry into the Sac where it meets the big water at Rio Vista. Be sure you take it very wide and enter the channel closer to the north side than the south. There is a very large sand bar on the south side and I know someone that ended up in 2' of water and stuck there for some time, he had a real bad day!

Steamboat is very pretty but has no services other than gas at Snug Harbor. I'd advise the Sac until you have full faith in your boat.

I hope you have a safe trip and enjoy the Jazz Fest!

I'll give the counterpart to Gnarley's answer. I like the Steamboat Slough route. It is more scenic and has fewer 5 mph zones. The time will be similar on each route, but you open fewer bridges on the Steamboat route and have a better view. Either route is good , it's primarily personal preference. Remember to be courteous as you pass docks on the way. There will be many eyes on you. You can either represent boaters as polite caring people who share the water or as a selfish self centered boater that doesn't care about the dock owners property.

Do both; one each way. Get to know the Delta. I agree Steamboat is much prettier; Wayne shouldn't have many if any bridges to raise on either route. You are not that far from services on Steamboat anyway and Vessel Assist covers them both. If you are going to Sacto this weekend make sure you have a slip reserved.

Have Fun!

File a float plan since this is your first trip up into new territory. Then give a copy to marina, to a family member or friend, put one on the dash of your vehicle and email one to Phil at Vessel Assist. Then if you get lost or need a rescue, they will quickly know where to find you.

Here is Phil's email: vaaadelta "at" aol dot com

And then you can relax and have a great trip!!!

Wayne, I hope the trip worked out for you. Too bad the weather couldn't have been a bit better. All this rain and all.

Wayne,

Your back, tell us about your excursion to Sacramento.
