I have a broken piece on my steering and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement. I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas about either repairing this piece or replacing it with something else or the same thing (if you know where I can get one).

It's an OMC Stringer/Stern drive on a 17' Crestliner buccaneer from the 70's.

The part I need is the steering rod ball joint that connects the mounting plate on the engine to the steering rod. I have taken some photos and placed them on the net but I put them on my server with the wrong owner so until I get home and chown them to the right owner you won't be able to see them. I'll update my question later with the photos but here's a quick description.

It looks like a forged piece so I don't think I can weld it. How about a piece of stiff rubber hose clamped down with a couple of hose clamps going cross-wise across the broken piece? I'm not sure what kind of loads are going on there with the steering but I can't imagine they're THAT intense. How about some mastic putty/epoxy?
