I need to get my trim tabs back down to the metal, Is their some chemical I can use to do such?
What the paint is is just ablative bottom paint,

Should be an easy job with any type of chemical paint stripper.

2nd that by design it should come off with use a power washer should accelerate that process quickly.

4 1/2 inch angle grinder with stripper disk.

That is what I used for cleaning all running gear after basic barnacle removal.

I use a citrus paint stripper and it works well. Paint it on and leave it for a while when you come back use a scraper and you will see results but you will have to repeat if you have multiple layers to remove. The nice part about the citrus stripper is it won't hurt anything including your hands.

Be careful using a stripper, make sure it won't pit the aluminum tabs. I would use a wire brush on a grinder. You can also use a paint scraper.

You folks have aluminum tabs on the boats?
I use a chemical stripper when needed as the paint holds on pretty well with the Primocon base coats we use.

Any chemical stripper should list what to use it on and what not to use it on. There are several products designated as "aircraft paint removers". As aircraft are aluminum, I would think your aluminum trim tabs would be safe with one of those products.

I'm sure the trim tabs are stainless not aluminum.

Most likely are stainless, but Walter go to any automotive paint store and purchase "aircraft stripper". It is good for aluminum or stainless and will lift any paint.

Scotch-brite pad on a drill makes short work of of the tabs. Bare metal, all over in 10 minutes.

Went to Pep Boys, got what Greg recommended, I see online not the best, but good. The best I can't get local, need to order online, weather being good, will play tomorrow.

Walt,

Did you try out the paint remover yet? Is it so-called Aircraft paint remover? I am also trying to clean up my tabs before installing Bennett drop fins. I don't know if what is on the tabs is barrier coat, hard bottom paint, or just very hard ablative paint but it is not easy to remove by scraping.

+1 on what gcolton said, angle grinder with stripper disk, or even a good brass brush. I usually use one to get all the barnacle hold fasts off my tabs before I repaint them. Wear goggles and a respirator so you don't breathe the dust. Its fast and does a great job.

Erich,
Yes I did. Leave it on for am hour or so before you scrape. Will take multiple coats, but am ok with the results.
