I am the proud owner of a 2001 Monterey 302. Post survey, and post sale I immediately discovered the water heater is pretty much shot, and had to bypass it to keep pressure on the fresh water system.

Has anyone replaced theirs with a tankless one?

there have been a number of threads about this in the past, if I recall most would say not practical on a boat. They require to much power and you need to either be plugged in or running a generator for it to even work. Others will chime in but do a search I believe there is so good info in some old threads.

Oh and more importantly congrats on the new boat best of luck enjoy!

Everything I've read, most tankless units are gas fired. An electric unit would have to pull a LOT of amps to provide decent hot water, more than you would want on a boat. So, Dave is right. For the vast majority of boats, tankless systems are not the way to go.

Im an electrician. A small 240V tankless unit is rated at 6000 watts. That would require a pretty big generator, or even a hefty shore power circuit. The advantage to a marine water heater is the coil inside that heats water from the engine cooling water so you have a good supply of hot water whenever the engine is running, without needing a generator.

Not all marine water heaters are plumbed to circulate engine cooling water despite having the fittings in place.
