Anyone have details on anchoring or mooring in Lake Tashmoo on the Vineyard. I've heard it's great and am considering that as a destination for next year. Specifically interested in anchoring holding ground? moorings available? and Depth. I don't draw much but might have some sailboats along for the ride. Can we get a 6 or 7 foot draft boat in there?

Any and all info is appreciated.

You've heard right. I love this place and have been there 3 times. Holding is good with a sand bottom. Moorings appear to be for residents only but lots of space to anchor. Going in last summer, my depth sounder held a steady 12 feet from entrance channel to anchorage. In fact, the reading was so steady that I thought my depth sounder was broken and once anchored I tossed a weighted line overboard to manually check the depth. Trees come right up to the water's edge on the west side and provide good protection from southwest winds if you favor that side when picking your anchoring location. Our stay last summer had gusts to 25 and we stayed safe and sound on a 22 lb spade anchor (10,000 lb sailboat). About 2/3rds of the way in on the east shore is a town dock with a floating dingy dock. Trash cans for your garbage and fresh water there too. It is about a 20 minute walk into town through a pleasant/quiet residential neighborhood. Last year we took our bicycles and felt very comfortable leaving them locked up at the dock overnight.

Marc, thanks for the response. 12 feet sounds pretty good and glad to hear the holding ground was solid. I had heard mixed reports of whether or not this harbor was suitable for sailboats. I am power but will have several sailboats with me. I will likely get in contact with the Vineyard Haven Harbour Master for more info but really hope we can do this one. It's been on my list for awhile.

Another question, besides the dingy dock/water/trash are there any restrooms there? I know there are some in town but thats a ways away.

Also, was the anchorage tight, ie.. crowded or was it fairly easy to find a spot.

Thanks!

About 200 yards up the road there is a small park with tennis courts. There is a 1 seater bathroom for men & another for women. No showers. The bathrooms are very clean. They seem to be open each day though I've never tried them after noontime. One morning they were locked up but on our way back from town after breakfast, they were open.

While we're on the topic of bathrooms - this past summer the pumpout boat was kept at these docks. I could call the harbormaster at 8:00 AM & be pumped out by 9:00. Made it very easy to plan your day.

There is lots of space in the anchorage & I have never had trouble finding a spot for myself. Also, there are many sailboats in this harbor.

Marc,

Great info, I really appreciate it. On the off chance you see "Wocket" there or anywhere else this summer, stop by and say hi!

Prospective,

Tashmoo is homeport for us. Just put on our winter stick and hauled the boat last week.

It can be a very busy anchorage on weekends.

There are some moorings available for rent from Tashmoo Boatyard. 508-693-9311.
Vineyard Haven Harbor Master 508-696-4249.

There is some shoaling on the inside/end of the western jetty that extends into the opening and additional shoaling further in on the same side.
On other note, it might be a long haul to the town dock depending on where you anchor.

If you are going to make it up send me an e-mail. Hope this helps.
