I have a Volvo QL 900 bow thruster. I was under the impression that running the thruster out of the water would cause damage but a quick review of the install document doesn't make this statement one way or the other.

Is there any reason to think damage might occur if I quickly check the operation before launch? I did read the blades must come to a stop before reversing direction.

The QL is a belt driven thruster so maybe it's fine.

I assume that the propeller bearing are like cutlass bearing and require liquid for lubrication. I also wonder about extended no load operation and potentially over speeding the unit? I think bumping it momentarily would be fine but turning it on and letting howl might be bad.

I have an electric thruster . Manual states all over not to operate out if the water . It does not state reason not to . Just to not ! I have bumped mine year to year . I'm thinking with no load and continued use bad thing would happen

I don't see any down side to bumping

Could always have some one spray a hose on it while bumping it.
I have bumped mine when I had one to check it.
I also had the volvo ql

Thanks for replies, running it hard doesn't sound smart.
The reason I want to do it is - to port works as expected, to starboard feels weak or not working at all. If i can determine there's a problem before launch I won't have to haul it mid season.

Spraying with a hose might be worth the while. Thanks.

Motor needs to be under load. It will overspeed out of the water and damage the motor. Its Ok to bump it in one direction or another, though.

Virtually any issue along the lines you describe will be dealt with inside the boat; electrical connections, bad solenoid etc. About the only thing you can do with it out of the water is change the zinc and the prop.

I think you'll be fine running it for a second or so just to be sure it turns. I wouldn't run it much more than that. Let it stop before trying the other direction.

Running a garden hose on it will do nothing except get you wet.
