The "A" marker entering the Severn

Its been a long time since I've spent any time in the Chesapeke. Once I moved to Northern Va. most boating is done on the Potomac, but on Mother's day I convinced my boating friend to take our boats to Sandy Point. We put in and had a nice jaunt in the Bay turning into the Severn. I always used to use the Spider as a reference point back in my sailing days, but on this day we saw a marker just south of the spider with a large yellow "A". It wasn't on my GPS Navionics gold chart, and a quick Google search doesn't really tell me much more than "a prefered route"

Can anyone tell me difinitively what the yellow "A" indicates.

Thanks.

Shows you why GPS should be considered "nice to know information", not primary navigation. I'm on Lake Erie so don't know much about the intercostal but I would guess it is the first (A) mid channel marker.

No it is marking some sort of point of a triangle that extends out into the bay. There are green circles e-1 thru e-8, then h1-h8 etc. along the base, each with a 50 yard radius, but I'm not sure what these circles are supposed to designate. Maybe the location of race markers, since this is a popular area for sailboat racing. I think its gonna take a local to explain. (see the pdf page 14 rb2@gr5t http://www.google.com/search?q=Severn+river+chart&hl=en&start=10&sa=N You will want the chart just outside Annapolis on the Severn. Look for Flashing Yellow 2.5s 5M "A"

After a lot of searching, I think I answered my question.. the green circles, each with a designation I believe are assigned anchorages for U.S. Naval vessels. There's a parallelogram that goes from the "A" marker out into the bay. Some of the circles further out are larger, probably for larger vessels. From what I've found, yellow is used for special assignments, and the Large A most likely stands for anchorage.

So much for legends... that's what's missing from my GPS..

You found the right answer. If you look in that area right now you will see a naval warship sitting there, for commissioning week.
Angels arrive tomorrow for practice session.
