I am sure this has been covered here before, but... Does anyone know of a surveyor that is using thermal imaging to identify moisture infiltration into coring? After having lived through a few surveys as both buyer and seller, I find moisture meters to be inaccurate, and inconsistant, especially where bottom paint is involved.

I am especailly interested in finding a surveyor in the New England area, specifically RI, eastern CT, or southern MA.

If you can’t get a surveyor with the system I have a Thermal Imaging system in my car- just a quick ride up and zap the boat like this:-)

Do I dare ask why you are driving around with thermal imaging equipment in your car???(just kidding)

Is it really that easy? I remeber reading something about TI in Professional Boatbuilder magazine, it looked like there was some knowledge required to propperly read the image and gauge the degree of moisture saturation?

And yes I would think you would have to be trained to identify moisture infiltration into coring
If i'm right Al has this training

Thats an option I have not seen yet on anew car, either you are in law enforcement or you are the new Knight Rider.

Al sent me his new business brochure in which he advertises thermal imaging as a service. It is really quite something.

As an aside, one has to wonder how this will effect manufacturers who take shortcuts. I only see good things for the consumer from this technology.

Dan,

I suggest that you contact the local FLIR rep and inquire of use of thermal imaging equipment for identifying wet core in boats. Speaking with the rep may assist you in identifying surveyors / boat yards that have purchased IR cameras.

Fluke is also marketing a comparable product to FLIR - either manufacturer should be able to assist you.
 
Wow, I had no idea that was out there for cars. Could you come and park behind my boat and tell me if there is any water in the transom?:>
