Thinking about planning a trip the end of march

Jmas, recieved the cruising guide yesterday. Thanks alot. We have reservations at big game club. Now we just need to watch the weather and compile a list of cool places to see, both by boat and on land. Understand the Compleat angler ws the place to go until ints untimely demise. Where would be the next best place for a crew of go-fast boaters to have a few cold ones and mingle a bit?

Sylvain, Olivier, Maybe we can make a weekend trip this summer. We can take turns dragging each other behind the boat to see who can attract the biggest Hammerhead. I read somewhere that it was fun. First one to attract a Shark is the loser.

I'm in for a summer trip to Bimini Joe. Just set the date!

I am looking to go to Grand Bahama first week in July out if West Palm.
I have a 28 ft chap cruise around 30 mph.
I am looking to cross with a group.Does ayone know any trip organizers or wesites to check?
I have looked at the flings on the bahamAS website but they leave from lauderdale.

A few people from your neck of the woods will go down the ICW to Ft Lauderdale and then leave from there after overnighting. You get to ride the gulf stream on the way there.

But at a cruise of 30 mph the correction isn't that bad. It's only two hours at 2 knots. Or about 4 miles correct? At little attention to the wheel once in a while and it won't be so bad?

It is an easy trip,Weather permitting, from Ft laud. As Sylvain says, taking advantage of the GS is a plus.
Coming back to WP should be OK.
Are you going to West End or Lucaya?

I dont want to leave from lauderdale. I prefer to leave from west palm and return through there. I was thinking of staying at old bahama bay in grand bahama.

Hoping macjazzy will fill us in on his Bimini trip if he did make it.

Sorry for the delay it was a very long weekend.

Yes we did make the trip. Left Ft. Lauderdale at 9:30am friday morning. Water was rough but not undoable. But it did keep our speeds down to around 40-45mph Stopped once in the middle of the gulf stream just to take it all in. I wanted to jump in but it would have been tough getting back on the boat because of the rough water. We made it across in about 1hr 40 min. Did some zig zagging back and forth in Front of Bimini while we got our bearings and then made an uneventfull passage into South Bimini

We got a lot of attention being the only non fishing power boat there. Stayed at Bimini Big Game club. Ate in their restaurant almost every meal. Service was incredibly bad but every meal was good, ate lots of Conch, and the people were all friendly.

The hot night spot while we were there was Big Johns. Went there both nights, they had a bahamian band. They were good, all the songs sounded the same but with different lyrics though.

snorkeled at the Sonora (concrete ship) and went to the beach by boat to the Bimini Bay resort on the North side of North Bimini. Anchored the boat off the beach and waded in. Beautiful beach and resort.

Left the next morning at first light. Made it back across in a little over an hour.

All in all it as an incredible trip and I thank everyone everone who gave advise for this trip. Great bunch of people here.

Happy to hear you had a good time. Was the Island what you expected? would you go back?

What ws the fuel price in Bimini?

The island is more depressed than I expected. Most of the buildings were in serious states of disrepair or total distruction. Lots and lots of houses that had been started then abandoned.

The people were all very friendly, which is not always the case in places that are tourism driven.

I would definately go back if I got he chance to do it by boat like we did. would probably not fly there. But oating there was amazing.

Fuel was 5.30 on South bimini. Not sure I remember the name correctly. It was an entrance that you would pass on yor right as you lined up to enter Bimini Souths harbor. The inlet was surrounded by condos.

That image is pretty much what is seen throughout the Carribean. People have a tough time pulling together what it takes to get a house built and all it takes is a hurricane to set them back hard. That's why alot of the houses have a single floor with re-bar sticking out the top in case they can get enough together for the top floor.
When you talk about rough water, what was it like? 3-4 or what? Was navigating in the shallows easy provided there was sunlight?

macjazzy,

North Bimini may look depressed but it is about the same as it always was, in fact there is more upgrading going on now than years ago. I swear I almost cried when I heard that The Complete Angler burnt down. Lots of good memories with my friends there.

I see more depressing sights here in South Florida, especialy homeless and the state of some young people, than you find in Bimini.
Once you spend some time on Bimini and fish around some of the small cays to the South, you feel like part of the Island.

I will go back soon.:):)

Nice report - to me Bimini is the most depressed of all the islands but maybe it is also the most authentic??? I like the Abacos alot but it is a long way andprices get higher as you move east.

JMAS - I am in for a trip ANY weekend! I'll pitch in for gas and do some driving if you like...just the guys, some scuba tanks, a fish or two, and lots of beeeeers! I'm ready anytime after this weekend's wedding
