Thinking of moving to Carver next year

I'm thinking of moving out of an express cruiser into a sedan bridge next season, and one of the candidate boats is a Carver SS -- likely 42 - 43 (used of course). Is there anything in particular I should watch for? Any service access issues? I've heard good thing about Carvers in the rough, but do they tend to be blown around much while docking? (while I'd love to get one with IPS drives, I'm thinking I won't get that lucky). Also, are there any parts of the design or layout that just don't work?

Any sedan or aft cabin style boat is going to be blown around in a cross wind compared to an express cruiser. A bow thruster might be nice.
 
awboater is correct...doesn't matter who makes them, although some are better than others. All of the 42 SS's we've sold have IPS drives, but they do make it in inboards, and they would have bow and stern thrustes standard. The previous boat...the 42 Mariner was only inboard...gas or diesel, and all of the ones we sold had bow thrusters, so I don't think you'll have an issue. The 42 SS came out for 2006 and was mildly restyled for 2008 and renamed the 43 SS.
 
i am going to have to disagree with the above comments re: being blown around. i had the 33' express before i bought my current sedan bridge. I can absolutely dock the sedan bridge easier than the express, especially in high winds. While the express had a lower profile, the I/O's made it more difficult to back into the dock vs. the inboards of the sedan. As well, the substantial increase in displacement makes my current boat much less prone to being tossed by the wind.

We looked at the 42 SS prior to purchasing our 2001 Trojan 440 Express last year. We loved everything about the boat, especially the new IPS system by Volvo. Unfortunately it was out of my price range due to it being so new. Also I still love the express style for the boating we do on the Hudson. Through conversation with Reps from Carver, they have all said it is one of their best designed running boats in that class. It was said to have great handling and speed with the IPS's. A big plus on the boat is the washer and dryer located under the Galley floor. Here is a video link to a 2007 42 SS.

I'm hoping that I can get a used one with bow thrusters, as that would is a large amount of sail area with the canvas up! I'm fine with inboards, though my present I/Os are spoiling me -- IPS units would be perfect, but I'm wondering if I'd see them on a 2 - 3 yr old boat. Unfortunately the price of a new one is way out of reach for me as well!
 
I have a 2005 33 (38 LOA) SS. It is easier to pilot than my 20 CC in any condition. I have inboards. Awsome craft. There is more surface area but it has never been a problem for me. When backing, back into the wind.
