I was headed out the Roudout to the Hudson yesterday around 10:30am (around low tide) and noticed what looked like a wake just beyond the entrance traveling west into the Roundout. Only, there were no passing boats within sight. Anyway, this one footer quickly gained momentum and height as it moved. So by the time we were between marker 7 and 5, the wave had to be about a 4 footer, with another slightly lesser one behind it. Our hatch was opened, a good amount of water came in.
Anyone see anything like this before? I asked Jeff at Roundout Yacht Basin and he said he called those mystery waves "tidal waves" and thought it had something to do with low tide going out. Since the wind was out of the east, maybe that contributed to the height and speed?
