We hit Newport then Block. Left Block for Nantucket on a perfectly calm day, RI Sound 2-3 footers with East wind 5-10kts, partly sunny, perfect for the trip across.
Exited the Salt Pond into absolute glass conditions on the South side. The route, which was a first, was to take the east side of block and snap a line for the buoy off nomans and then enter Nantucket Sound through the channel between MV and ACK.
As we rolled south east to east we hit some choppy rough waters very quickly, but, nothing to be concerned about. My daughter (19) was in the head below and got caught off guard with the sudden condition change. She was tossed up and when she came down shattered her ankle -- kindof a freak, bad timing accident as the conditions weren't bad at all.
Talking with the safesea captain that provided assistance to my PAN-PAN call said there's a little stretch of water about 1/4 mile wide that is always rough no matter how calm the conditions are on the East-South-East side of the island right where we were.
This incident cost us our vacation as we had to get back to block and then the mainland.
As a side note, Nantucket Boat Basin, to their credit, was very understanding and provided a full refund of the 3 night deposit less a 50 dollar admin charge.
Maybe this will help others be aware on that side of the island even in very calm conditions.
Safe boating to all
Tim
