Trip to Block Island

We used to Power set everywhere we went. Then someone mentioned what I had said and I started going down with my scuba gear and seeing how the re-set would occur "real time". For the re-set to occur the shank needs to be upward or taught to the boat. The anchor will pivot about its lowest spike, similar to a spiral. If during the shift the wind kicks up hard the anchor is all prepared to dig in hard. Getting back to the original scenario, If you are dug in hard on a 180° wind shift the shank just topples over the flukes causing a potential chain foul up or tumbling of the anchor until it sets. I have seen both conditions.

If we are at the Menemsha, Edgartown, Cuttyhunk or Nantucket we surely drive it in deep on a Power set.

Champlin's was fun but verrry crowded. Organized chaos is the best description of how they manage place. Raft up was ok but by the end of the week my decks looked like the men’s room floor at Fenway during a Yankee’s game from other boat traffic. PS. Bring extra shore power cords if you want power on a crowed 3-4 deep raft up weekend. They don’t have enough plugs and didn’t seem to care. Did finally get power. Wouldn’t go during peak time again.

I called the Harbor master and was told that you can raft up to two boats on a town mooring. It is at his discretion of course. Probably doesnt want a couple 40 footers on one ball. They charge for each boat. A 26 foot boat is about 40 per night. Not too bad. Just thought I would pass the info on.

The way I read it, there is a seven day limit to anchoring there - that should not affect most boaters.

After reading Tommy's article, below, I see they are voting on a 72 hour limit.

Leaving Monday for 6 days. Should be there by noon-ish. Bob, I talked to a guy who goes every year with his wife in his 20' Four Winns. If he can do it, so can you.
