My friend is looking into buying an 07 57' Voyager and he's quite troubled by the fact that it has D9's on board. Should he be? He mainly boats out of Georgian Bay(lac Huron)Ontario.
Thanks for feedbacks.

The suspicion of a boat being underpowered is always reason for concern. Keep in mind that if you and your buddy are concerned, so will potential buyers when time comes for him to sell.

Disclaimer: I've never been on a Voyager with D9's... I'm speaking in general terms. I've been on a test-run with Kenny's boss in a D12 powered 57, and she SCOOTED.

Having said that, the big Voyagers have an extremely efficient hull. Compare the flat entry angle and even flatter deadrise to nearly any other boat that size and you'll be less surprised that Carver got away with putting 8.3 liter 6C's in the 53 footers and D9's in her big sisters. (even though the 53 with 6C's was considered to be underpowered)

The D9's are underpowered engines for that boat. Stick to the D12's especially for resale. I would agree with SLW.

I agree with SLW. The 57 with the D12s is a fast boat (for it's size/weight). I've never run one with the D9 500hp, but I have run one with the TAMD75P 480hp Volvos, and I would probably stay away from those. Although it does plane out and run relatively well, it just takes more time to get where you're going.

I would suggest buying the boat if you like it with the contigent that it performs to your satisfaction. While people may say it is underpowered, it may be just fine for your needs. Buy it, take it for a sea trial when it warms up, and keep it or bail. You may be completely happy with the performance of the 575's

I have run a 57 with almost every engine they have offered. 480's use less fuel and it seems that the people who buy those boats are very happy with the fuel useage vs speed (19/20 knot cruise). The 675's the boat is fast for its size, I would say that the 575 version should be right in the middle of the road and probably produce a nice 23/24 cruise while still using less fuel than the 675? Go go for a Sea Trial and see if you like it, you can ask on internet forums until you are blue in the face but your friend will like what HE likes!

Thanks to all for the inputs...a sea trial is next on the list.
