Carver…doing my part to keep the post counts up!!

We pushed off on 7/9 and returned home on 7/24. We went a total of 454nm and stayed in 8 different marinayacht clubs. We traveled with a 36' Silverton express. We were certainly the odd couple but it worked out good. We always left before them and almost always they would catchpass us and would be waiting to handle our lines when we came in.

Day 2 and 3
We took the south passage around the islands and headed for the Detroit River. We stayed 2 days at the Ford Yacht Club which is a beautiful facility and a great location. Great place to dingy.

Day 4
We traveled up the Detroit River and spent the night at the Harbor Hill Marina across from Belle Isle. The river was closed for the power boat races and there was a nice car show of older Detroit iron.

Day 5
We left the river and traveled across Lake St Clair and entered the Clinton River. The plan was 2 days in Mt Clemens Mi. We traveled the 7 miles of no wake down the river and the city officials of Mt Clemens refused to turn on the power for us so we turned around and went back out. The river run was nice. We then decided to go to Algonac which is located in the Lake St Clair North Channel. We stayed at what used to be the home of Chris Craft. There is a lot of history here!

Day 6 (Algonac)
This was a great place to dinghy.

Day 7
We left Algonac and came down the St Clair River, crossed the lake and ran the Detroit River. When we got to the Lake (Erie) it was rough so ducked in around the corner and spent another night at the Ford Yacht Club.

Day 8, 9 and 10
Lake was still rough but we hugged the Mi shore line and made our way to Port Clinton Oh. We stayed at the Port Clinton Yacht Club. Very nice facility with good food in town. We had our best meal of the trip in a restaurant called the Garden.

Day 11
We made the run from PC to Cedar Point. We have been to the park by boat for several years. Even though my wife and I don't ride the rides we enjoy the shows and watching people.

Day 12, 13, and 14
We went from Sandusky Bay over to Put In Bay on South Bass Island. We stayed on G dock of the Crews Nest which is a little away from the main hubbub.

Day 15
Went from PIB over to Seaway on Kelley's Island. There were several of our boating friends from different clubs on the island and we had a good time.

Niles, looks like a fantastic trip, thanks for sharing it with us. Your boat looks great. New canvas?

Erie, rough? No, couldn't be. ;-)

Very nice pics Niles...trip looked fun...
Thanks for sharing ...and thanks for helping with the post counts...We only have something like 25
thousand or something to tie Hogan and the HRCC, or Canal Dwelers, or whatever they call themselves...

Are you in any of the pics?...

Shel...canvas was new Oct 07.

Carver...yea next to last picture, guy on right with blue shirt and grey hair

Niles, looks like a great trip, and I recognize a lot of the land marks. Sorry to hear about your SNAFU in Mt. Clemens--did they say why they wouldn't accomodate? Just crazy to turn away tourists... Good thing you used Algonac as a "plan B". Good folks there and a decent marina. We've taken the kids there for a day-cation; good boat ride and nice to spend time at the pool, tiki bar and restaurant.

Cheers,
Christine

Christine,
The Mt Clemens thing was a head shaker. The first person we saw at city hall said "why would you come to Mt Clemens". We got bounced around the departments, one guy didn't want us to leave but finally someone called and said they wouldn't turn on the power. We did read a couple days later in the fine print of another publication that they will only turn on the power for 10 boats or more or special events. Oh well...their loss.

Thanks for the Pics! I guess there are peaple still living in Michigan! I really enjoyed following your trip! I grew up near the Ford Y/C and the Detroit River. It brought back fond memories!

Niles did you tie up downtown Port Clinton on the Portage River or at a marina there?

Planeguy, we stayed at the Port Clinton Yacht Club which to starboard right after you enter the river. They have a long wall along the the river for transients but we were off the river using members docks that were out.

Hey, sorry to hi-jack your thread, but I have a picture similar to your Mt. Clemens, MI picture.

I moor my boat pretty close to the Clinton River and have lived here all of my 30 years and have only just recently made the trip up the river for my first time.

It was a nice late fall cruise. Downtown Mt Clemens is always a good time to for night life!

Hey Ken34, I missed this when you posted...we were in Co for Thanksgiving and I got behind reading BE. Great pictures. We didn't see any deer on our trip down the river. We still wish Mt Clemens would of worked out. We are coming west again in 2011 just don't where yet.

well if you make it this way I will do my best to run into you and say hello!

Its too early to tell what this year work will bring to make any big trips for me, but we do boat all summer locally.

My wife's job allows her to be off all summer, and we try to stay on the boat all summer.

This year we are on a different boat though. a 32' Carver named Anchor Management II.

by the way I love the mainship. Dock neighbors have one and my wife LOVES it!

This is our Harbor just north of the Clinton River. We actually run up the Clinton River every Friday night for our Friday night wine cruises as the dinghy will fit under the bridge!

Thanks Ken. We are not sure what's up for this coming year. I'm hee-hawing a little because the youngest of our three girls is getting married next August and I know the supply of cash will be low or gone:) The guy in the Silverton that we travel with hasn’t brought up next year either. But…if we do head out it will be west and I’ll let you know what we are doing. BTW…there is another BE member docked on the Clinton, his name is Don (Marykhubby) and the boat name is DOCK'ed WAGE$.

Merry Christmas

Actually I am docked just north of the Clinton river outlet on the adjacent (west) side of Anchor Bay, in Mac&Ray Harbour.
Great place for a stopover with nice floating docks next to the bathhouse - top notch restaurant and facilities there...

Last I heard from you the work thing was getting in the way of boating...did you make it CP this year? Because we went east this year and did Lake Ontario and the NY canels we didn't get to CP :( First time in many years.
