What is it?

Most of us have seen ( at least part ) of a bulbous thingy that sticks out in front of large vessels, such as tankers and cargo vessel. It looks a bit like a torpedo hit the bow head on, just at the waterline, then stuck.

I know what it does, but what is it called?!?!?
