Hi,
I have an 1981 Carver 3007 Aft Cabin with twin
350 Crusaders with around 1000 hours on each.
What would be the best oil for this application?

My first thought was: anything that is changed anually(fall)will be fine. In the great lakes we don't usually get a chance to put that many hours on our engines and getting the old oil out prior to winter storage is more important than what brand you use. I use Valvoline for everything that burns gas, Rotella or Cat DEO for diesel is good. Let the debate begin....I'm sure you'll get opions on every kind of oil under the sun! Regardless of what you decide to use, changing oil prior to winterizing is probably the most important factor affecting engine life.

you've asked a question with a 1000 answers, if you have the manuals it'll be in there. I use shell rottella 15/40 it's work for me and still has zinc in it for my flat tappet cam shaft. Did you just get this boat ? if so can you asked the last guy what he's been using ?

thanks everybody, I talked to the previous owner he used Wolfs Head straight 30 wt. Why
is it important to change in the fall not the spring?

Crusaders in your neck of the woods should use straight 30 weight oil-not many brands still make straight weight oils. Down here in Florida, I use straight 40 weight because of the higher temps. You should change the oil at the end of the season to remove the acids and crap that has been absorbed into the oil.

been using Mercruiser 25/40 motor oil in every Crusader I've owned for quite a few years at my Crusader Dealer's recommendation.

I use 25w 40 Mercruiser oil for the past 20 years in my 1985 Chris Craft which I still own and with origional engine. I also used it on my Carver 3257 Montego Express. No issues.

The weight the manufacturer recommends, with the appropriate service stamp (or greater) on the container.

I am using Merc 25/40 because that is what Merc recommends and the engines are still under warranty. After that, probably Rotella Synthetic.

In my present boat w/4.3 mpi Merc's I run 20/50 at the recommendation of my mechanic. Prior to this boat, I always used 30w in boats, cars, trucks and lawnmowers, never lost an engine.
I don't think I have ever heard a mechanic say that engine blew because you used, whatever oil. I'm beginning to think you should use whatever makes you feel good.
