Went down to Shrewsbury Rocks on Sunday morning with some friends targeting Fluke.

Weather was nice in the am but turned around 11:00. Fished until about 02:00pm then called it a day.

Caught 5 nice keeper Fluke, a bunch of shorts, the usually Skates and a Dog Fish. No Sea Robins yet.

Dinner was excellent.

Anyone else out fishing this weekend?

I was also out Sunday morning, but due to a late start and the bad weather on its way, I opted to stay inside and fished the Navesink River only. We fished both sides of the Oceanic Bridge area and only managed one fluke, although it was a keeper. Very slow - didn't even catch the normal shorts.

There were a lot of other boats in the area but I didn't see anybody catch anything.

Were you using jigs at the rocks or the more traditional fluke rigs?

Nice catch Jonathan.

I like the stuff my fluke and bake them with lots of butter. What did you use for rigs ?

We used large spearing and squid strips on green and pink skirts with colored spro's rigged with the spearing and squid. Typical fluke setup.

The reports I heard on the dock, the fluke fishing wasn't very productive on Sunday.

It seemed most were targeting strippers over near Romer Shoal.

Sardins work great also on that rig... Try them next time out but keep them on ice until you bait the hook. The size of your catch should increase on day one.
Good luck,
Mark

Sardines, would that be packed in oil or tomato sauce, LOL.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom would eat them straight from the tin.

Anyone seeing the price of bait going up and up?????

Got out today and dropped the lines for some fluke... CT water near old saybrook CT.

Only managed 5 drifts or so but managed to get 2 keepers in 75-85 ft of water. I got the larger one with my sardine setup at almost 4 lbs. We had to use 20 ounce lead and let a lot of line out to hold bottom. I haven't been out in rough water like today in many many years. We put on NOAA as we ate lunch and they said 1 foot or less.. LOL

Friday.. Baked stuffed fluke for lunch at my house.

4# fluke is nice, what about 21-22 inches?

WOw 20 oz to keep it down. I freak when I use 8 or 10!!!

How big are the sardines? Are they like Sand Eels?

Jonathan

Thanks,

We only weighed him with the Boca but that sounds about right for the length. Nice thick filets for lunch. We don't like flukin with that weight either and didn't expect it to be moving so fast, 5 or 6 drifts was all we could take. The wind was coming out of the west and the tide was coming in from the east so that made it very hard to hold bottom.

I paid 3.99 for a dozen. For a whole day I use about 2 dozen. You also need the double hook fluke rigs of any color.

We fished in 65-90 feet of water and the temp was 64. We like the deeper water around structure for the larger Fluke. We find the best bite to be a few minutes before the tide goes slack and coming out of slack. The same area last summer produced a 10.5# and 5# in the same drift.

My buddy crossed my line with 20 ounces on as I was bringing him up… my 20 his 20 and almost a 4 lb fluke… add in the current and I thought I was bringing up the world record fluke :)

I should be out again next week for another report.
