The last time the Admiral was at the helm she hit the dock during a strong wind. So now she's starting to question weather or not boating is for us. Anyway, we are currently located at Locust Point Marina (upper/upper Chesapeake), and I was wondering if anyone could tell me a nice place to drop anchor for the evening that is not to far from Locust Point. I figure if we take a short cruise and then drop anchor for the afternoon and evening, that would get her spirits back up. We are very close to Chesapeake City, but that's not exactly a quiet place.

Help Pease.

I'd say start with the Bohemia. On the South side after 1st enetering is one area, down on the North side before the bridge in the No Wake zone is also a big anchor spot. If you go under the bridge the point almost dead ahead has a sandy bottom.

I'd have to agree with Dave's recommendations. They certainly aren't the only nice places, but probably the closest ones to you. Tell the Admiral not to sweat it. If anybody who'd ever hit something, or made some other mistake with their boat, had quit boating, there wouldn't be anybody left boating. ;) Stick with it, and you will likely find the rewards to be well worth it. :D We are located on the Bohemia, or will be once we bring the boat down next week, so hopefully we'll see you out there!

Just tell her to do what I do - I turn the helm back over to the Captain so it's his fault when we smack the dock. :D[:-eyebrows]

I'd head to the Sassafras River. Drop anchor just inside the 6 MPH Zone. If you have a dink you can take her to the Granary for dinner then back to the boat for a quiet evening in a safe area.

Greetings bmetros,

We were at Locust Point for a few seasons before Dick & Mary bought it. Great location. As others mentioned, the Bohemia is THE prime easy cruise spot, IMO. Easy to get to and enough driving to feel the water under your hull. If you want to try your hand at foreign docks, the Bohemia Bay marina has a nice long bulk head to practice on. Another "practice" marina is Summit North up the C&D. It is in a hole, so winds are not bad and the docks are all floating. Drive on up for a night.

Winds are, IMO, the single biggest turn off to power boating. If they don't make handling around the dock a pain they can chop up the water for a bumpy wet ride. We all have to deal with them and even the best can get thrown around or even pinned against the dock <do do do, da da da>. Keep with it, that's just part of the fun and makes for good war stories.

Thanks everyone.

I should have been at the wheel, but instead I was untying the lines. I told her "that's why we bought an older boat". She just has to get a better feel with the throttle. Practice, Practice, Practice.

I think we both need a nice warm sunny day on the water. Unfortunately, they have been far and few between.

Additionally, I hope someone has their pump-out fixed soon!

See you all on the water.

Well…the trick is knowing how, and what, to practice.

Not to hijack the thread but we are planning to boat 6 weeks at Summit North beginning 6/15 and plan to take a 7 day cruise and then a bunch of 3 and 4 day weekends. You suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We have been down before and visited the more popular places like Baltimore, Annapolis and St Michaels all of which we would like to revisit but we are looking for the places the "locals" go. Thanks for you help.

Mike, actually a little of both since I prefer to be on the hook but the Admiral likes the creature comforts of a marina.

A place that is not visited by many is the Wye River. Many coves and creeks with good protection from weather and a lot of spots have good bottom fishing as well for perch, croaker and spot. later in the season good crab fishing.
For the jumping scene Kent Narrows. Lots of good restaurants in walking distance and Red Eyes dock bar with Bikini and muscleman contests on Saturday.
For a quiet spot with good restaurants Knapps Narrows marina and on the east side of the narrows and turn to port is Dun Cove. There are many nice creeks with good anchorages on the north of the Choptank River.
The Chester River and the creeks off it are really nice. You could try Lankford Bay Marina which has a trolley service to Rock Hall or anchor in Lankford Creek.
Pay a visit to Chestertown. The trip up the Chester River is very pretty and there is a lot to see and do in the town. That could be a good spot for a two day stoppover for rain or windy days.
On the western shore Deale, Herrington Harbor, the West River and the Rhode River for anchorages and marinas. Gailsville has some nice spots.

Whoo boy. Maybe Mike the Mod. can move this into its own thread as I can see a thread a mile long on this topic (which is always good for all IMO :)

Anyway, Mike the lanbuilder mentioned a lot of the biggies. Still Pond, Fairlee Creek, Hart-Miler Island, Rock Hall, and on and on are more. Drop me a PM and let us know when you are around. We are at SN as well and can bring the charts over and have a look-see. There is a BE get together planned as well. If it is early enough I am sure you could fill several seasons worthof trips there.

GL!

Mike captured most of the ones I was going to mention.

There is a nice but small anchorage just inside the South River ... travel south from Annapolis to Thomas Point (be sure to stop and admire the most famous MD lighthouse on the Bay) and enter the South River. Look for the entrance to Selby Bay on your left. It's generally quiet and we've seen a few raftups there in the summer. You can also fuel up at Anchor Yacht Basin.

WOW I had no idea I may be doing this more than once. Mike, Mike and Scott thanks for the info. Scott I will definately look you up I will send a PM once I know everything is firm. Right now we plan on ariving at SN 6/16 weather permiting and driving home on 6/17 after that we are there every weekend.Again thanks guys.
