So, Im a ct river boater hanging a tices shoal in barnegat bay via lis and nyc. Coming time to work our way home, debating going back thru the east river and seeing the north shore west end or going in/out south shore to shinnicock canal , we havent seen either area, suggestions?

The locks can be a bad experience if they are open. That's my only issue with going south.

When at Essex and alike we always go south , I'm just more comfortable .

That would depend on how much time you have, and what you have done already.
If you've seen the sights in the Hudson and East River sides of Manhattan and have never enjoyed the South Shore then I say head south. A night or two on Fire Island can be pretty nice.
If you're not interested, or don't have the time to spend at the beach, then I would go the other way.

We have time, dont need to be back till mon nite. Were in a slip rb2@gr5t seaside park now, getting kinda crispy from all the beaching so i think were leaving here tomorrow, thru the city to the sound hitting Oyster Bay/ cold spring and either port jeff or Mt Sinai for remaining time. Been to port jeff once , havent seen the other two yet. Ill be leaving the south shore on the list for another time.
