On my 19' i/o, there's a hole in the bellows on my VolvoPenta sterndrive. This bellows is a flexible rubber boot around the universal joint/driveshaft.
The hole is 2" long, shaped like a J. It starts as a sliver and turns into a flap. The hole let my boat sink, luckily I was in shallow water so only 300-500 gallons of water came onboard.
Why would this fail? While there are some openings, the bellows seem to be in a pretty protected place.
Is it typical for them to fail suddenly?
Thanks
Randy
