Hello all, as you may know from a previous post my gimbal housing was corroded badly. bought a good used one, replaced the bearing bellows and shift cable, got it all mounted on the transom. AND THEN, noticed the bolt pattern for the y pipe is different. On my gimbal housing there are 5 bolt holes,two top, two bottom and one offset, I'm assuming this will mate with several different pipes. On the housing I purchased, there are two lower one top and one offset. My question is... Will 3 bolts be sufficient to keep it from leaking, maybe with some high temp sealant. Will a y pipe that matches the bolt pattern be compatible with the rest of my exhaust, or should I start from scratch again?

What year was your boat...but more important, was your old pipe round or squarish. They also have slightly different connections at the top and may not line up. I'm not 100% sure because I always matched bolt bolt pattern.
 
Charlie, I have a 1988 Regal with a 260 5.7 in it. My pipe is squarish, I was told the housing came off a mid 80's boat. Everything else matches perfectly. After some reading I see that the offset bolt pattern was mainly used for a single pipe 4 cyl. But I have also seen it on the three piece y pipe assembly. I did read on another site that mercruiser says it is acceptable to use the 3 bolts, but I try not to believe everything I read. I was hoping someone here had come across this.

I believe you will find that the gimbal mount will have enough holes to accomodate any Y Pipe configuration from a 4 cylinder 6 cylinder v6/v8.

Yes, my gimbal housing does have the 5 holes that would accommodate most all, but the one I bought has only four holes with the one offset to about 10:00
 
I have a new 4 hole'r (no extra hole) with rubber connectors and elbows that I never used and the one piece round one that came off a '78 I was gonna replace it with. A friend has a '77 with a 3 piece and my '73 has a 3 piece. The 4 hole'rs won't mate up with the 3 hole'rs.

Little confusin'. I guess they changed to the one piece Y pipe around '78.
