110 junction boxes

Long and short I had work done to the boat by a yard. During the job they cut way too many wires for no reason. Can I have a junction box below deck? Gas engines. The water heater line was cut among others. It would be very easy for me tie into the existing line and run to the water heater. Otherwise I am going to have to start removing panels etc to install a full home run from the panel to the heater.
 
The water heater is normally on its own circuit. IIRC, next to the HVAC, the largest load on the AC side is the water heater or the electric stove which also is on it's own circuit. If you are tying into another circuit, I would say no.
 
Ism this in the cabin or the engine bay? If it's in the cabin, I'd say it's probably OK if the connections inside the junction box are soldered and shrinkwrapped, no wingnuts. If this is in the engine bay, I'd recommend not to do so. I've heard of some pleasure boats having AC voltage receptacles in an engine bay, but personally I would avoid any sort of connection around possible gasoline fumes, including spliced wires which theoretically loosen and spark. I'll bet your insurance company would feel the same way. Just my recommendation. Hy.
 
I would be tying into the Original water heater wire, just before it was cut. It would still be just a water heater circuit. I am not tapping Into other circuits.
 
Solder on a boat is a no-no. Proper connections should be with a crimp connections-shrink-wrapped being the preferred or secured to a buss board.
 
Don't you love it when you have to fix other peoples f**k-ups ?? 1) IMO...do it right and rewire the circuits.......it may save your life. 2) Move out of that " boat yard ".
 
You don't say where the cut wire is. If it is in the engine room I would do as Don says and run a new wire. Make sure to use marine wire. Romex from Home Depot is not stranded and not a good idea. If the cut is not in the engine room you can slpice it, but wire nuts are also not a good idea. You need to use some kind of a crimp connection and the butt connectors are one way to do it. I have recently been rewiring my boat and use the Buchanan crimp tool. There are others and the pics below are the crimp bands and plastic covers.

I know you are on the island. I have a lot of left over wire and you can borrow my crimper if you go that direction.

Bill.....correct if its not in the engine room that's a good way to splice.......but I would also add some silicone sealant to the end where the wires enter.....to keep any moisture out. Using a waterproof junction box would add protection also.
 
I really don't want to get into right now because I am not sure who reads this forum but I am absolutely livid.I only come out of the water every couple years and this is the first time I had work done by a yard, other than painting. Instead of doing the projects I wanted to do, I spent last week cleaning up their mess.

Thanks for the wire offer but I made the yard buy me a spool.
 
I apologize and stand corrected. Soldering connections is a no-no; I must have had brain-freeze to have suggested it. Crimping and shrinkwrapping is the way to go, outside the engine bay. Hy

I agree no soldering under any circumstances. Use the proper lugs and yes you can install a new sealed junction box using the existing feed and then a new run to the hot water heater.
