hi, I am buying a 1968 cal cruising 46 with the original 4-236 perkins diesel with V drive. because only 1500 hrs are registered when they installed the hour meter 15 years ago, what should I look for to assess whether this 40 year old perkins is in good condition or if it needs rebuilding? second, is it worth it to rebuilit or just
take the old one out and pop in a new one.

what sort of problems arise from a 40 yo perkins which presumably
was "not used much" what should I expect, what should I look for? and lastly what routine maintencance work must I do to keep it in good shape for a long time.

would appreciate your answer. I know nothing about diesel engines

chances are the cooling system is junk, they have a lifespan. Price the cost of replacing the cooling system over replacing the engine. They were good base engines, but the bolt on's need to be reliable or you have nothing.

What did the engine surveyor say?
