2009 Fireworks ?????

Where i am in Woodside is still pretty good. I'm on the South Side of Queens Blvd...aka the blvd of death.....and we are not too over crowded yet and everyone takes care of their property......well, almost everyone.

the part where i grew up, roosevelt and 58th has changed quite a bit, but its still great to go to a couple of bars. The best burger in NYC at Donovans Pub.

Let me see. Gildea's on Queens Blvd in long island cty. Used to hang out there quite a bit. 58th and Roosevelt? I used to race the Rockaway Beach bus on my bicycle from 61st to Beach 168th and win once in a while. Used to buy pastery at Walter's, and shop at the fruit/vegy stand under the LIRR tracks at 61st. We went to St. Paul's church right there.
As I recall they had good onion soup at Donovan's also. Wasn't Finnigan's Rainbow right there? I heard there were always fights at that place back in the early 70's and stayed away.

oh man......you were here a while ago. Let's see, Walters is no longer there, its changes hands a couple of times. Used to be great stuff. That fruit/veggie stand under the train was owned and operated by a friend of mines dad. When his fathere health began to fail he sold the place and it has since been bought out by the city for construction of the elevator and such.

St Pauls is still there i believe. I think they had a fire about 18 months ago, but it survived.

Starting this time of year the lines for that rockaway bus on 61st get out of control! Thats a nice ride on your bike man. Beach 168......been there a few dozen times!

Finnigins Rainbow...yeah, that placed used to be a blood bath. Hung out there a few times. The family that had owned it is still in town, the matriarch, Aunt Kay as she is known is still kicking....great woman. But Finnigens sold and opened as a traditional Irish place called Kilmegans......this was maybe 12 years ago. Kilmegans ran pretty well for years. Big spot for folks new from Ireland. It sold about 2.5 years ago and the new owners tried to open it as an Itilian Chop house restaurant......that did not go over well. He closed for 2 months, reopened as an all Italian, and that failed too. Now about 6 months ago it opened as kind of Mexican with some Italian on the menu. I dont think its doing well. Thats a big space if you remember.

Donovans onion soup is fantastic....you remember correctly. Was there last night to catch part of the Mets game and pick up burgers to bring home for me and the wife. There is a chance i spend too much time there.....hahahahahaha.

later,
dan
