So looking at a boat. Was previoulsy at my marina and I looked at it 2 years ago. This guy bot it instead. He had it surveyed when he bot it and it was all good. I spent a couple of hours going over eveything and it all seems to check out (including checking it with my own moisture meter). But I am having trouble getting a surveyor lined up, which is obvioulsy frustrating. Is there any circumstance where you would simply rely on the less than 2 year old survey plus your own due dillegence. We would do a good sea trial to make sure all the mechanicals work. What say you. Thanks in advance.

most people are pretty adamant about surveys , and hard to argue with them - but In my opinion, it depends on the boat. If it’s a three year old boat, a two year old survey may not be that valuable. But if it’s a 25 year old boat, could there really be that many new problems that you would not spot?

that being said, you may need a current survey to insure ( assuming you plan on insuring), so might as well get one now?

and What if he put both the props on “backwards“ then hooked the shifters up in reverse :) ?

Current owner is a long time boater, so he seems to know his stuff. He's made a lot of improvements since I last saw the boat. I am confident he kept it in good shape. I could always pull the boat and verify the props are good.

As for insurance, I got a quote from my current provider and now they won't leave me alone. :) No survey needed, apparently.

Do you really expect intelligent answers when you don’t bother telling us if you’re looking at an 16 or 60 footer… a 3 year old boat or 30… gas or diesel…

“current owner is a long time boater” doesn’t mean anything…. Knowing what you re doing and doing it are two different things.

If I was buying a small boat, under 50, i May skip the survey at least for the hull part. But o ve been a boat owner for 30+ years

Sorry my post didn’t meet your standards.

I'd ask why is he selling it after just 2 years of ownership? Is it giving him a lot of trouble?

No he's moving up. Doesn't want two boats. Bot one 24 hrs. have we agreed. Wife wanted a full sized refrigerator as they are spending more time on the boat being recently retired. Happy wife, happy life. :)
