Hello, I have a 96 292. We have had alot of rain lately and I went down in the boat last weekend and the floor of the midberth had water in it. I felt the sides of the surrounding area and they were dry. There is not a leak from the roof apparently either. I think that it is comming up through the floor. I opened the sump pump area and there was some water around the sump box. I turned on the front bilge and it took the water around the box down a little but not dry. I am just wondering if there are any other 292/2960/3060 owners that have been through this before I start taking things apart. Any input will be appreciated. Danny

Danny,

I have a 98 292. I have never had any leaks in the aft berth. But if you had water in the forward bilge you might have a leak somewhere else as well. Mine has always been dry. Anyway, the step from the cockpit has a drain line, I would check that connection. It would be pretty much above the area you are talking about. The other possibility is that there was more water in the forward bilge and it got high enough to soak the carpet in the mid-berth area.
Just my thoughts. Good luck in finding the leak.

The a/c is under the seat in the dinette close to the location but is not it. I have allready had the line for the a/c straightend so that it drains better in the sump pump in the floor now. I think that it is soaking up through the floor as well. Do any other 292 owners have any water around the sump box in the floor after a hard rain? You have to open the trap door in the floor to see it. The drain line for the step area is a great point but is notleaking. Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to check and see if there is a hole between the forward and rear part of the bilge that is blocked for some reason.

dont have a 292 (wish I did) but my 2665 had water around the front sump and the carpet was wet when it was new.
Turned out to be the windshield was leaking.

I had a problem w/the a/c hose also. Stopped leaking when it was straightened.

With a leaking windshield, wouldn't the ceiling be damp or wet in an area where it is leaking from or does it come down the sides of the hull and just make it to a bilge somehow?

I don't think your windshield could cause the leak without seeing some sign of water in the ceiling. You could pull the access plate for the windshield wiper and look around up there. I think the windshield is to far forward and it would tend to make the water go to the bow area as it's sloped that way.

I do have a couple of ports that leak when I wash the boat. The water could make it to the bilge but I see signs of the leak on the inside of the hull liner and not behind. However, the back port might leak in and down the liner to the bilge. Do you have your canvas up or is the cockpit open to the elements? My cup holder in the dash does not have a drain line attached and that is right above the area that is wet.

This leak sounds like a tough one, you might have to get a helper with a hose and start hitting the suspect areas while you watch below for the water.

Mine leaked and then ran down the fiberglass and entered by the salon door down the side and on to the carpet.

We didn't notice because we wern't on the boat when it rained.I went to it one night when it was raining and watched a stream of water come in.
It had no way to get to the ceiling, however that is where it was getting into the boat.

Thanks alot for all of the helpfull suggestions. I am storing it in my garage this winter so I will have plenty of time with a hose and a light. I will figure it out eventually and post my findings here.

On my 292 I had water and dampness in the sump access area at the foot of stairs. Would drain back to the bilge pump when underway.

Water was coming from small leaks in The tubing (plumbing) fittings. I replaced several Genova brand, and the whole area has been bone dry now for 3 seasons.

If you are mostly on shore water connection, you'll miss the leaks since your house water pressure pump won't be cycling.

Now that you mention it, the last time that I stayed on the boat I had the water hooked up to the hose for the first time all season. I put a new transom shower on it and left it on overnight without thinking about it. That would make me feel better than an outside leak because I can fix it easier. Thanks

I have also had numerous problems with the interior plumbing fittings, (elbows and tees). I have had to replace several. On the most recent problem fitting, I took it apart. I found that the plastic hose had managed to work its way out of the fitting a good 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. You could actually see places on the hose, where the metal teeth of the fitting had slipped down the plastic hose. The next time one of them leaks, I am going to try loosening the fitting, pushing the hose back all the way in, and then retightening.

FYI, there are a few tees and elbows beneath the kitchen sink. That is where I discovered a number of leaking fittings. Good luck taking that panel out. I ended up cutting mine in half with a backing plate to allow for easier removal and replacement.

where is the trap door in the floor on the 292 to get to the sump box? Are you talking about the access area just below the battery switches in the mid cabin? I had a really bad leak a few months ago that also drenched my aft cabin in about 1/4 - 1/2" of water. My mechanic said it was likely the fact that I didn't have the sump pump turned on all the time to drain the forward bilge compartment.

My boat was out of the water the past week and we got a ton of rain (about 2-3") and again the aft cabin is wet, although just slightly. Now, it also could have come from the defrosted refrigerator this time...but maybe not, once again sump pump turned off as the no power while the boat was getting worked on.

It's been a little while on this posting, so let me know what you found out as well!

greendoc,

The access to the shower sump area is at the foot of the stairs. There is a metal trim piece in the carpet. Pull out the carpet from the bow side of the metal strip. It should peel the carpet back and hinge up an access hatch to the shower sump.
