Hi Gang,

I've been lurking for a while and decided to join the forums.

I recently acquired a 1986 3297 and have been enjoying the boat immensely, but had a question that hopefully someone can answer.

I need to install a new in-hull transducer. The transducer location is below the floor in the aft portion of the main salon.

I'm having trouble determining where to run the cable in order to get to the cable chase that leads to the helm.

The current transducer cable is very thin and disappears under the fresh water tanks, so using it to pull the new cable is probably not possible.

The bilge under the main salon and galley is divided into port, center, and starboard by stringers that run forward to the state room.

I can run the new cable forward through the center portion of the bilge, but there appears no way to get past the port stringer so I can get into the section of the bilge that has access to the cable chase up to the bridge.

The main cable chase up to the bridge appears to be located on the port side in the closet in the forward state room.

I have looked for possible access points through and under the cabinets in the galley to no avail.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

Hey Tim,

Welcome aboard the forum!! I have the exact same boat as you, but in this particular case, my transducer is located in the middle section aft of the waste holding tank. Just going from memory right now, but I don't know of a way to run that cable from the salon area like you have for yours. My only guess is that someone poked a hole through the stringers to run that cable.

You are correct on the cable chase being port side in the front closet. I put a new transducer in when we bought the boat 6 years ago and had to poke a larger hole through the front stringer to get the transducer's cable to fit through. Its doable, just make sure to seal up the inside of the hole so moisture doesn't get into the stringer.

That being said, the water tanks look like a pain to remove to see if you can find where that currently runs, but I am guess its through the stringers at some point.

Hi Tim. I had the exact same year Mariner as you. May I suggest you can run your transducer cable from the bilge by following along with the water line from the pump to the salon A/C (assuming you have A/C.). There is a cutout in the stringer to route the water line. From there into the cavity where the a/c is located, (you will need to remove the partition wall in the base cabinet under the sink, you will see wiring and hydraulic steering lines. Follow those-you will need to pull out the stove and the cover over the vertical chase in the port closet to get the cable up to the topside. You will also have to remove the foot restinsert below the helm steering to access the space under the helm. You will see where the wiring harness and lotsa everything else comes in from the salon. The first time you do the work, it will take a while, but after doing it over and over during the 10 yrs. I had my 3297, it's pretty much a cake walk. Carver actually put some thought into servicability. If you ever have any questions, I'm happy to share my knowledge. I pretty much know that boat inside and out.

On some carver models you can see a black panel from outsider removing the window glass allows access to this panel and wiring is behind it

Thanks guys.

My AC was added aftermarket and the unit is located under the salon seating.

I will pull the stove and see if that gives me access. There is a notch in the port stringer through which a wring bundle passes. I only need mid point access to get me from the closet wire chase to the location in the stringer with the notch. I'd prefer not to start drilling holes.

I have already been under the helm numerous times and my footrest is permanently removed and replaced with a snap on canvas cover.

I don't know why Carver originally closed up the area under the helm as there is a ton of usable storage under there. My friend calls it "the garage".

I appreciate the advice.

Regards,
Tim
