36 Gulfstar Mark II trawler updates

Joe the front windows can be tinted if the bottom 50% are not tinted, think of it as a sun shade. In addition I have an upper helm that is operational especially for night cruising.

I love the lines on this boat. She is really looking good. Best of luck with her.

Looking great Billy, hope it all goes smooth. Congrats on new daughter-in-law! Keep the pics coming and take your time, will get down when it's done...going to be great.

I forgot to address my new Daughter in law. She's wonderful and they are high school sweat hearts. She is a teacher in Egg Harbor City. They both went to college together at Rowan. They have been together 8 plus years. Both of these young adults really have their heads screwed on straight! It should be a great long lasting marriage.
Thanks Bob,
Bill

You and I both think the lines of this old school true displacement trawler are nice looking. Getting around on the decks is to some degree way different than our Mainship. However every inch of deck missing is interior volume. For a 36 she is quite large inside similar to our Mainship.
I just have to get used to taking it slow. This boat's sweet spot is about 7 knots. You can push her hard and get 8.8 knots but that's it.
This should be a wonderful boat for us....

Very nice Bill. I like the way you hid the self deploying satellite controlled stabilizers. ;-)

There was a time when good boat design began with the shear line. Most any boat with a concave or flat shear will look good forever. The new floating bling boats will look like those old outboards with fins from the 50s and 60s soon enough.

I'd check out V-Kool window film for at least the front windows if not all of them.

Thanks Bill I'll check it out. However for the side and rear glass I prefer dark black tint, it's a beautiful look.

My Wife & I just got back from the NJ-DMV. It's never a good idea to go the last day of the month! I walked out with a clear NJ Title, new hull numbers and the proper registration stickers. I'm not documenting this vessel there's no real need to. I'm glad I finally got this straightened out.

I never fully mounted Franks controller in W1 because I didn't want to cut a hole of the size required.

I carry one of the two BZ controllers I own as a spare, but I didn't re-install it. I found that, thankfully, a 5x8 oil discharge placard covers the hole perfectly! :-)

I've got my second controller at home that I was going to try and list on eBay if you're interested in a spare?

Contact me off line Kurt I have a spare but what the heck maybe I could use a spare for the spare or use it on another non boating project?
Thanks for the offer. So far I'm liking the way this controller is working. It's been on-line since the weekend. I intentionally put a 4 amp load on it last night. Using the existing panel laying flat on the ground the 2 house batteries were back at full charge by 2PM this afternoon. Also the trickle charger is keeping my old truck jump start battery fully charged.
I'm not sure which day I'll be coming down this week but I have my numbers, sticker and NJ registration so the boat should be able to be launched before the weekend. If I bring a hand truck loading the batteries, solar panel and heat pump will be easier from the dock than on land. I'll bring my oldest Son down to help with the lifting. I really need to put a serious dent to get this boat ready to comfortably cruise it back to NJ. If I leave the dock I'll stay in the Middle River and not wander too far from the marina. The water looks pretty skinny around the marina.
I need to check Active Captain to see where the closest dock is that has diesel. Jeff has a great program even though he and I don't get along. We both got in trouble in another forum yesterday.

Bill, it is quite interesting that you've had good luck with Frank's controllers and I've had good luck with Morningstar's. Frank's controllers kept failing on me. He'd stand behind them and fix them, but having to rotate 2 in order to have power got to be old. I've had the Morningstar for about 2 years now and it's been fine. My solar panel is 235 watts at 48v. Frank's HV controller shouldn't have had any issues with it. Specifically it's a Sunpower SPR-230-WHT-U (230W).

Kurt what was the failure mode? Did it short out and blow a fuse? If so which fuse? If it didn't blow any fuses what happened when the controller failed? My dump load AIR-X wind controller I purchased is a dual charge controller wind and solar. It also has a solar MPPT controller as well as the wind generator controller with a heavy duty dump load resistor. The resistor can be replaced with a dual hot water heater element although that's not in my short term plans. I didn't want to put both alternative charge sources into 1 controller. However I could if Frank's controller fails.
Thanks,
Bill

It's been a year or two since I switched to the Morningstar. But if I remember correctly I had issues with both BZ controllers. The first issue was a failed LCD display. Frank shipped me a replacement display. The next time one stopped working on I95 on the way to Florida (which is where I had the second one shipped). I can't specifically remember the issue but I think I was getting all kinds of crazy amp and voltage readings from it. I eventually sent it back to Frank who returned it and said there was nothing wrong with it. I can't remember if there was a third failure or I just figured I'd try a different brand since these things aren't overly expensive. I never blew a fuse that I can remember and the Morningstar has been working fine since installation (I'm guessing at least 18 months ago). I liked the BZ controller. I liked the display to know how many amps of solar I was getting.

Kurt it sounds like we both like the same features on the BZT unit. I like being able to tell the amps the panel is generating into the system. I also like the dedicated up to 15 amp load/ circuit feature as well as the 100ma trickle charger for a starting battery.
Bill

Kurt my MorningStar issues have been scrambled processors, the lack of output when it's called for the 2nd battery feature must be installed or it goes into an error mode. I haven't had one completely fail a re-set meaning removing the solar and both battery feeds has resolved any issues but it's not convenient. This was especially true when I had the unit buried in my old center console boat, it required a bit of dis-assembly work.
Bill

As usual I had a change in work plans that delayed me getting down Thursday (yesterday). I'm hoping to go down this Saturday to start working on the additions to the Gulfstar.
The number #1 upgrade will be installing the 14,000BTU AC/ Heatpump so even if the boats on land I can work on it in comfort.

What brand A/C are you buying?

I love your enthusiasm over this boat. After 5 years I kind of take my Pursuit for granted... and it is a great boat.

Joe It's a TOYOTOMI. I have been testing the unit in the 2nd story of my office >800 square feet it's like being in the Artic when I have the blower on full. There is little detectable compressor kick when it's called for. I'm venting outside a window at my shop.
Bill

Friends of mine have a 53 hatteras and they did the same thing with those portable a/c's. They have had them on there for years and work just fine.
