390 or 400 DA

TJ....I've often wondered the same thing....SeaRay, and many other brands, print numbers that contradict themselves....I don't know if anyone has the real answer to this one....generaly speaking though you have to be flexible, and learn to use the numbers as a guide...

Thanks Dominic, I was just curious because if the numbers are correct, I would think it would make a difference regarding the weight/engine factor.

Dom,
u sure about the diesel package... Id swear when the 39 came out it was with yanmars??
Today i dont know what there putting in her. But there something with the way she sits in the water... Like i saidfelt like alot bow steer. All I can say is test drive the boat with and with out the diesels... nothing like getting stuck with an under performing boat. Also remember the boats empty. NO gear , usually no water and very little fuel.. So if shes showing signs of being a pig on a test ride... once shes loaded up .... ull really be unhappy...

Rob:

I'm pretty sure...wouldn't bet the barn on it...but pretty sure.....back in that time frame, SeaRay was dropping Caterpillar and buying out Cummins...so I guess anything is possible...put they were having issues with the hardtop and the diesels in the 39...something to do with weight distribution....that's why no diesels in the first year....

I heard at the AC Boat show this month that Sea Ray was considering using CATs again....amazing how these things go around....reminisent of how Sea Ray was downplaying Raymarine back a year or so ago and playing up all Northstar in thier line. Now it seems like they are back to Raymarine as thier first choice....All comes down to dollars I guess....

But as far as ride goes, you are right...you have to take one out and load it the way you will use it and they make a decision for yourself...pick a sloppy day run her up....

Dom,
I was wrong ... yanmars were for the new 38.... My bad....

Thanx for the correction

Rob

Interesting - when I look at the 2007 380 DA online, I don't see any diesel option.
For diesels in 2007 Sundancers under 50' I see the following:

- Volvo options in the 240, 260, 290, and 300

- Yanmar in the 340

- Cummins Mercruiser (the JV between Cummins and Mercury) in everything 40' - 50'.

Mans' show up as either optional or standard in the over 50' models.

I don't see ANY diesel options (meaning gas only) in the 280, 310, 320, 360 and 380.

Weird!

Eric:

That is similar to the TJ's concern above...You have to be carefull when using Sea Ray's, and other brands, brochures and online specs as gospel....

Personal experience...When I was shopping for my current boat, I saw some 2000 410's with 3126 CATS. The brochure online states 3116 only. I had conversation with a 2000 owner on a "different" site who has 3126's from the factory...he even fowarded a "Printed" brochure that show'd the 3126 as an option in 2000...

Another thing to keep in mind here is the name & length game that SeaRay has played with their lineup. The 390DA & 400DA are completely different boats, with a several year gap in production and representing different sizing "slots" in SeaRay's offerings. We're actually talking about the 390DA, which is the evolution of the 380DA, later renamed the 40DA.

The 400DA was in production until 2000, when it became the 410DA with some minor changes. The 410DA was then replaced by the 420DA, which was later renamed the 44DA.

For this thread we talking about the 39 that became the 40..

Rob

I know I'm being technical, since it's only a digit away Rob, but the 390 became the 40. SR went to 2-digit naming around the 2006 model year when the 390 became the 40.

SLW:

Since you're being technical....I believe that the 400DA was in production through model year 1999....in 2000 it evolved to the 410DA....

They overlapped, so they pumped out the last few 400's in 2000, even though that same year marked the introduction of the 410.

If you look at the lineups closely, this overlap isn't uncommon. I assume they've decided that they can add value to the last few hulls by stamping them in the upcoming year, as opposed to making them appear as left-overs before they even leave the factory.

Currently, the only diesels that SR is using are the Merc/cummins and the Manns. The thing with northstar was that brunswick was going to purchase Northstar. That deal did not go through. No cats in SR's future. Only cummins and manns. But wait, there gonna start putting the Zues drive in some of their boats! Here is the link: http://www.cmdmarine.com/projectzeus.html

MArich,
Brunswick did purchase northstar... and now they are selling it ...

Rob

Rob, You are correct. Got my facts about that wrong. Sorry. I was thinking of Raymarine. I belive for a while, they were thiniking about purchasing that company. At least that's what I heard. Not quite sure if it was really true.

this months Motor Boating has a short article on a new 44 dancer with Zeus drives- the editor had a chubby over it

I read the article... The magazines loosing its edge... Used to be a time they gave honest opinions.... now everyboat they test smells like roses.... Said nothing about service . how the boat did in conditions.... a slight attempt at docking , keepingthe boat in a single position.

No pictures.... WTF.... I guess they all want the advertising money

sucks for us ...

When is someone going to test the sheering ??

Yes run the boat into somehting ... lets see the damage... we all heard about the tiara that didnt break off....

Thats what these magazines should do... not the fluff they print.

can yea tell im having a bad morning ?

I'm with you. I've heard the advertising money and the "they can't bite the hands that feed them" theory - but I don't buy that either. Every month I get a pile of boating and car mags. The boating articles use 5 paragraphs describing the floorplan (that's in the image anyway), but not give any real info.

In contrast, if the car guys don't like a car, they slaughter it. Two of the best car mags are based right here in my hometown. They write honest opinions, and still manage to pay their bills.

Does anyone want to start a new boating magazine?

I'm in! I'll start by handling the stuff I already know, like banging into sh!t while trying to dock, running aground 101 and negotiating pumpout stations in a 6kt current.
