48 Sea Ray Sedan

We ran our 1998 480 with 3196's to the Abacos many time from Florida. Hit 12 footers a few trips which made for a rough go for the passengers. Boat handled it fine. Doesn't like cross the beam seas over a few feet (and what boat does) Rides dry on the bridge in anything less than 6-8's. One trip from Daytona, Ponce Inlet, direct to Walkers Cay in the Bahamas, about 10 hours, the girls on board started getting sick after 4-6 hours of 6 footers on the nose. Again the boat did well. We usual slowed down to 18-19 knots in anything over 5 footers. We were carrying an 800 lb Rendova on a TNT platform. I would always recommend use as much trim tab as possible. With the nose held down the boat is a dream at 22-23 knots cruise in anything less than 4 footers.

S FL Boater,

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town.
My boat with the Cats and perfect props(blueprinted)/Clean bottom has never had any problem with planing/running. When turbos kick in it is amazing how quickly it planes.

Regarding sea conditions, I crossed Lk Huron to Tobermory This yr with 4 other boats in solid 6-8' beam seas. Definatly alot of spray, but my 4 kids love the ride and it feels solid always.

Head seas are tough if large enough. I have run in some pretty large waves going from the Straits of Mac./Petoskey to Beaver Island (I have a house there)with the west summer winds. Again It is fine but you know the waves are there.

Following seas are fun on this boat. No problem.

In any case I always use my Autopilot and do not have a problem. We hit Crews nest/Cedar pointe 5-6 times a yr. in most conditions and rarely cancel due to conditions.

I too looked at the New 52/58 and like my layout, not as sexy but good for my family.

Where are you in FL? I shipped my 31 FountainCC down to Ft myers today for the holiday.

Dave

I have an 03 480 DB that I bought new. I agree with all the comments on handling here. Well balanced boat with the engines in the middle.

If you still are looking, I can give you a laundry list of things to look for. Nothing major... if they were fixed in time.

Gary,

Thank you very much for the feedback! I would love to get a list from you on areas to keep our eyes on when we look at the boats?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Warm Regards,
SFLB
