6 people fell out of boats this weekend in SNJ

1/2 mile out of Barnegate a 19' Whaler flips over both guys wearing PFD's recovered by good people, 2 near one of the Casino's in Atlantic City again both saved only they were in a 14' boat in the surf, then 2 near Marchshelters (Little Egg) also recovered by other boaters. None were injured all were lucky. There were some serious swells and a small craft advisory. I guess fishing is that important? This all happened with in 4 hours Sunday morning.

I think they need bigger brains and bigger boats, and in that order.
 
The CG was announcing a 30+ Contender was in trouble 30 miles off Canaveral yesterday. Talk about looking for trouble. The seas were projected to be around 10'.

I was out on my friend's 37' Hatt on Sunday fishing off the Jersey coast down past Shark River and almost to Manasquan. Ocean conditions were actually pretty good in 70+ ft of water but there was a big swell coming from the east that would have made the NJ inlets pretty nasty. There were a number of center console boats in the 27-34 range chasing schools of tuna around. Alot of chasing, not too much catching.
 
Mark there were at least 10 boats from 14' to 30' mostly center consoles that left our marina to fish. The fishing has been real good down our way the last 2 weeks. One of my slip neighbors takes a gas powered 28 Bertram out to the Canyon almost every weekend he went out and came back fine. However he only has a cell phone and a VHF radio I can't imagine going that far out without at least an EPIRB, SSB and SatPhone. He has none of the above. Tony "Northstar" has been doing it for over a decade without incident.

I'm not in NJ, but this sort of thing happens everywhere. At least half of the "winter boating incidents/deaths" that will occur this coming season will happen to folks who are, generally speaking, reasonably intelligent, reasonably careful, and responsible ( when ashore ). They schedule a fishing trip around scheduled time off ( OOps, you -know what's gonna happen ), then take out their small boat, with no, or not-maintained safety gear such as a marine radio of any type, and head out for an all day trip with a one-hour weather window. It is sad, stupid and entirely avoidable. I figure we will lose at least 10 lives in the next 90 days, all within 70 miles of my home location.
