Hi I have a 81 3007 Aft Cabin Carver, nice boat
but the handling is terrible when docking, boat is hard to control. Doesn't seem to want to turn to sharp, is this the way they handle or someone told me a larger rudder would help???
Confused. Help
 
I'm certainly no expert on rudder size etc but under normal conditions with twin inboards your rudders should (generally speaking) simply be pointed straight ahead and steering is accomplished by engaging the engines in forward and/or reverse. I'm not sure how bigger rudders would help this. I did find on our 28 mariner that if the rpm is set to low at idle the boat doesnt respond as I wanted, so I increased the idle speed by 100rpm and that improved my dock handling a lot. Might be worth checking before you begin expensive alterations, which I'm not sure will do what you want. Good luck!.
 
I agree with Terry. I have the same boat as he does and it is a similar design and weight to your hull. I bought it last year and it is my first boat with twins. Once I got used to keeping my hands off of the steering wheel, I was good. I also agree on the increased RPM's as this has helped me immensely.

Your rudders should be just fine.

I got a discounted dock that had a rock in front of it and it was challenging to get in and out but docking with just the forward and reverse levers it is a sinch. Someone told me to picture the levers as putting your hands on someones shoulders to get them to go where you want and it works well. I usually have a breeze from the starboard side when motoring out and I leave the port engine a little higher rpm's and it stays right on track.

The worst thing you can do is use your steering wheel in close quarter manuvering.
