We are new boat owners and bought an '86 Winner w/ a Alpha I 170hp Mercruiser engine. It runs well but likes to die in idle or when going from idle to low gear. The problem is made much worse by putting lower octane gas in it which we found out the hard way (it would die under 2000 rpm). The problem still happens with higher octane gas but not as bad. What could be causing this?
