90 degree bend at discharge

Hello all.

I have a Jabsco electric flush 12v marine head. The discharge connection on this head would be in the 3 o'clock position if you were looking at it straight on. The problem is that there is not a lot of room between the discharge point and the nearest wall... so what is happening is the plastic line that is fitted to the discharge point is kinking to make the bend.

What I wanted to know is can I put in a 90 degree PVC bend just after the discharge point and then pick up my flexible hose after that? Is this asking for trouble... putting a 90 degree bend in the discharge line?

Can't be worse than be nearly completely kinked off.

Thanks,

There are BENDS instead of 90* angles. Just get the right kind of material.

I have a 3/4", 45 degree elbow at the discharge of my Jabsco electric head and it doesn't cause a problem. Can't speak for a 90, but IMO it would still be better than a kink.

As long as the toilet is functioning correctly a 90 deg. should not be an issue.

It's apparently working with a kinked 90 deg. in it now. A smooth 90 would be a big improvement. :-)

Replace as much hose with PVC as you can!

If you are going to use PVC fittings, make sure you use DWV (drain, waste, vent) fittings and not pressure fittings. DWV fittings are smooth inside and have less restriction.

Thanks Steve, I did not know that.

Capt Bill1, actually, it's not working correctly. It acts as though it is bogging down and trips the breaker. The head is no more than 1 year old so it's not the motor. I thought the wiring to the head was insufficient and when investigating, noticed the kink.

Probably will replace with a 90 degree pvc piece... preferably one of the rounded bends instead of a sharp 90. I've never seen a rounded bend in pvc though, only in metal.

Thanks,

There are 45* radiused bends that even allow you to make a corkscrew bend.

I had a similar issue with a vacuflush head. Jinked and blocked the flow. Installed a 90 degree elbow, worked fine.

It is called a sweep fitting. Here is an example from Lowes:

Yes. That's the type you need. Designed for waste plumbing, not supply plumbing. Turds can pass through this much easier than a 90 degree elbow. ;)

This is what I meant when I mentioned a large radius 90. Perhaps I was a bit too, shall we say, delicate for this crowd, neglecting to be specific about turd flow... :)

Well there is no "turd flow" with an electric toilet like the Jabsco as it all gets chopped up as it leaves the toilet. And I don't think "sweep" fittings like the ones shown are available in the small sizes anyway. However you can get about the same effect with two 45-degree elbows. To be honest I think a 90 will work without any problem.

Sweeps are available in 1 1/2 inch. They have the same basic radius as two 45s together.

The outlet on this Jabsco might be 1". Will go down to the boat tonight and measure and see what options I have at Lowes.

I worked in a large maintenance shop with all the trades including plumbers. Some of my best friends were plumbers and I would sometimes go out with them if my work was slow. Plumbers are not "delicate" when they talk about their work. To them a "turd" is a "turd". They often refered to themselves as "Turd Chasers".

BTW: If you can't find a fitting you need at Lowes, try a plumbing supply store.

I was a plumber back in the day. "Turd herder" was one of the more politically correct terms that we used to describe ourselves.

Call yourselves whatever you like. The discharge of a Jabsco electric is about 1" OD or roughly the same size as 3/4" ID PVC pipe. A couple of short lengths of 3/4" PVC and a 90deg elbow should work just fine. Make sure there are no burrs on the inside of the cut PVC to catch TP. 1" PVC hose is a REALLY tight fit on 3/4" ID PVC pipe, but heating the hose up with a hair dryer or heat gun will help.

I've never seen large-radius "sweep" elbows in 3/4" PVC plumbing pipe, but they CAN be had in 3/4" PVC ELECTRICAL CONDUIT in the electrical section of the same home store. Cut to suit.

I got the pieces at home depot. However, I'm not 100% I bought the right sizes... the pipe is ID 3/4 and the 90's are ID 1". Once I pull the line off the head (going to be fun since I pump uphill a bit) I can get an accurate measurement of the Jabsco outlet and/or the kinked waste hose connected to it.

But that I think about it, I think the waste hose will have a ID of 1" so likely have the wrong fittings.
