900 BILLION gallons of raw sewage

Thanks Bill, it is always helpful to hear from first hand experience. And Kurt for the models, it's a great place to start.

The first thing I learned in statistics back in college was that they can be made to look any way one wants them to. I read the above and thought the wording just a little too convenient: "those making less than $15,000 a year" - that isn't stating if they're on welfare/public assistance or not. They could be part-time workers who do not accept public assistance. But you're right, I'm sure they don't care about raw sewage much either way!

Here's an article from the other perspective: http://www.ijreview.com/2013/10/88205-guess-political-party-gets-support-welfare-recipients/

As Mark Twain said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

I am reminded of that each time I pay my cell phone bill. There's a tax on cell phone bills to pay for free cell phones for welfare recipients. Back in my day if you couldn't afford something you did without until you could afford it.

Look for a tax soon on boat owners so poor people can have free boats.

One other thing BillyK, you don't have to worry if you are in fresh or brackish water or if you have freshwater flush heads. The LectraSan requires a certain amount of salinity to disinfect. This is accomplished by feeding an external salt container. The PuraSan's old cartridge has been replaced with a basket and what looks like Chlorine/ Bromine style tablets. It's less expensive to reload then replacing the old PuraSan style cartridges.

Well, sort :

"The Lifeline program is not directly subsidized by taxpayer monies. It is paid for out of the federal Universal Service Fund (USF) through a fee assessed against telecommunications service providers, who may or may not pass those costs along to their customers:"

Please don't go there. That USF fund (and the multitude of other taxes) really add up for small business owners. I took a quick look and I pay $120/month in phone taxes. So, yeah, I feel like I'm paying for some "free" cell phones.

Maybe I'm just reading the Bill of Rights wrong and the Second one is supposed to say: "The right of the freeloaders to keep and bear wireless phones shall not be infringed"???

Please think clearly about what you posted. The "fee" is an added expense and the service providers must pass it on to their customers one way or another. They could raise their rates or do as mine does, show it as a government fee to provide free cell phones for welfare recipients.

In my area, providers actually have TV commercials urging welfare recipients to call and get their free phones. Actually, the free plan is a little better than what I pay for with my own money.

I have been a lot of places in this country by boat, the worst pollution I have seen was in Washington D.C.
While at Gangplank Marina, I say raw sewage, diapers, garbage and everything else you can imagine flowing into the water. Absolutely disgusting, not to mention the hypocrisy of our government. Not surprising.

I did. Now think clearly about what you posted. "There's a tax on cell phone bills to pay for free cell phones for welfare recipients." So all I was doing is pointing out that it is not a tax by the government on your cell phone bill as you stated.

By the way the program was started by Ronald Reagan The cell phone part of the program was started during the Bush administration. And Clinton was in on it too. So this big government crap cuts both ways.

Then again maybe the program is just a good one and that is why both sides keep it going. Stranger things have happened.

"It's not a tax."
now, where have I heard that before? :(

OK it's not a "tax", it's a "fee". In reality, there is no difference except for the name. It's the government taking money from its citizens and using it for whatever purposes it wants to.

When I was growing up, there was an incentive to get an education and get a good job so you could afford the things you needed or wanted. Government handouts have removed that incentive for many people. No need to get an education, no need to work hard, the government will provide for you.

Well, that government is supported by me and others who work (or have worked) and pay taxes so in effect, I not only support my own family, I support another family that I don't even know.

I may be making that trip in May/June as part of a Chesapeake Bay cruise.

My understanding is that the Potomac River is much cleaner than it used to be.

There are much better/nicer places to go in the Chesapeake than the Potomac. You'll waste days trying to get to DC if you want to even go there. Ron, should we restart your older thread about the Chesapeake for those of us locals to put our 2 cents in for destinations or perhaps start a new topic?

I'm figuring two months from Charleston, SC and back. We used to live in MD not far from DC and still have family there.

I'm not thinking of DC in place of anywhere else, but in addition to other stops. It's been a very long time since I've seen the monuments and all there is to see.

Seeing the Nations Capital from the water should be pretty impressive.

Just don't skip Solomons if you can help it. Rock Hall is a nice stop. Annapolis is good too.
