We're almost at the finish line, and I'm at the point of creating a bill of sale. I came across a website called rocketlawyer.com and I was wondering if anyone had used that site. Any other suggestions??

Thanks in advance
Dave

Does your DMV have a bill of sale? Might save time to use theirs if so, (CA DMV handles cars, boats and trailers...YMMV in NY.) I cleared the sale and released myself from liability by filing on line before the buyer even registered it.

Quoting Speedo: "...I cleared the sale and released myself from liability by filing on line before the buyer even registered it..."

Not sure that works in every state. Florida, for example, has an "I sold the Vehicle This Date To xyz" form. It specifically says the Seller remains Responsible till Buyer processes Title.

Again in FL, but this is for Vehicles and Boats. Boats are worse: The Numbers don't change, the Annual Validation Sticker doesn't come off, so the boat draws no attention from law enforcement. But Wait: Worst is yet to come. Boat gets abandoned, sinks, accident, leaks fuel/oil into the water. Registered Owner Responsible, and there hasn't been a legal transfer.

GO TO DMV or whoever handles boat registration/title. Exchange money and signatures right there. Make sure it's THEIR boat before you leave.

I take it you have never been to a NY DMV...

Or the NJDMV. What a disaster I tried to title and register the GS yesterday with my wife. NJ wants the DHS Documentation papers signed by the seller and Notarized. The only problem with this is the previous owners should have done this and not given me the documentation. The brokers going to take care of this today as I'm off to Maryland for the next 3 days hopefully to get started on readying the vessel for it's voyage to NJ.
I'll return to the NJDMV next Monday with the Documentation signed and Notarized even though the document clearly says not to be used in place of a title and that it must be surrendered to DHS when the vessel is sold.
How do I know I just sent my signed and notarized documentation back to West VA for the Mainship. The new owners are not documenting the Mainship. In addition I'm not documenting the Gulfstar. The problem is in Maryland the title must be surrendered to the DNR when a vessel is documented or so I'm told?

Bill, when you go back, you will get a different employee, and they will tell you something different. Be prepared for several more trips...

You can get a bill of sale from The National Vessel Documentaion Center (Coast Guard), on line.

While I am not an attorney, you want to assure the buyer that the title is good, but that is all. So there is no question about warranties and representations made, as seller make sure the bill of sale includes language such as:

Seller warrants and represents to Buyer that the title conveyed is good, its transfer is rightful, and the Property is delivered free from any security interest or other lien or encumbrance. Seller and Buyer hereby acknowledge and agree that the Property is to be sold and conveyed on an “as is” basis, without any representations or warranties of any kind, expressed or implied, either oral or written, made by Seller or any agent or representative of Seller, with respect to the Property other than so stated above. Seller hereby disclaims any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose or quality.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. Between NY State and the Federal Documentation Center there are numerous applicable forms available online. In addition, I'll use the template I found on rocketlawyer.com as a guide for a word document that will be the primary Bill of Sale.

Many people say the happiest days in boating are the day you buy and the day you sell. I couldn't agree more on the "buy day", but it sure is a bitter sweet experience on the sell end!
