A/C Shutdown

Take all his electronic toys away , send him outside and tell him to get busy.

A/C shut down same way about 30 minutes ago. 24 hours after the first time this trip. Turned it back on and so far so good.

I had a "Come to Jesus" meeting with him earlier this afternoon and now my wife is pissed...at me.

OK, new info.

It ran 2 hours and turned itself off again. Dead except for the set temp showing. Moving the up/down buttons had no effect. Pressing Cool started it up again. Still running.

I decided to do a couple of things before letting it run.

1. I hit Temp button and it thought that it was 61 degrees in the cabin. The set point was 76. Hitting Temp again flashed between 61 and 76. It was about 76 degrees in the cabin when it quit.

2. I did a factory reset to original configuration.

3. I calibrated the Temp reading to actual of 76 degrees in the cabin instead of 61.

Still no fault codes. For some reason it thinks it is very cold in the cabin and shuts down.

Still sounds like the logic board is bad. You're either going to need to replace it or get a servicing tech out.

Ben

If I had a fault code I would call a tech. My worry is getting a parts replacer who knows nothing except replacing parts when I can change the entire unit for a couple of grand...if I do the in and out.

Has it occurred to you Doc to call CruiseAir or have a professional (not merely a "parts replacer") to look at it?

All good ideas. Thanks.

Now tell me what to do with an 11 year old boy that we took for a week to a world class resort...South Seas Island Resort on Captive Island... that says he is bored by every activity they have here?

I'd say he has good taste. :-) I've always thought of SS as a big money sucking generic resort.

But you might motivate him by giving him the choice of waxing your boat or hanging at the pool and buying over priced Cokes all day.

What about the sailing school there, do they have day lessons?

Back to the A/C issue. Have you tried switching the control panels yet? If that doesn't cure it then I'd say it's the control board.

I am going to call Cruisair when I get home.

Where I am now it would cost a fortune in travel time alone to get it looked at. Captiva Island is at the end of a chain of barrier islands. To get here by car it is about 50 miles of 30 mile an hour speed limit from Ft. Myers.

My SMX controls have a little door on them. How do they come loose from the bulkhead?

I am going to switch them at home to try and further isolate the problem.

Caltexfla.

Bonk...is the sound of me hitting myself on the side of the head before it occurred to me to call Cruisair now.

The tech said that the temperature sensor probe at the unit thinks it is icing up so it shuts down, The probe needs to be moved or replaced. End of story he said. No fault codes for that.

Capt. Bill...the cokes are only 6 bucks. He thinks sailing sucks (me too) and asking him to wax the boat would get the same result as asking our Maltweiler to wax it.

Me...I really, really enjoy hanging at the pool. There are some real race horses here from all over the world. Too bad thongs are prohibited.

Grandson, on the other hand, can't see the big deal with that.

I'm wondering if you install the optional remote temp sensor probe if that will resolve the issue. Place it in or near the return air vent. These are less expensive than replacing the entire SMX unit. I believe it plugs in using a standard RJ-11 telephone style cord into the main control board?
Then again try removing the current one and cleaning the Gold contacts where it pugs in. This could resolve the issue even if it's a temporary fix?
Bill

The tech said it plugged into the box on the unit.

It is located on the bottom left of the air intake. It may have to be moved away from there.

I still don't understand why it would be so cold there. It is under a settee not close to anything that might make it sense cold.

I had mine installed on the top of the air intake, there shouldn't be anything where you or I had it that would cause false readings, perhaps you should try cleaning it off anything even just moving it a few inches, it sounds like it's defective so changing anything might not help? It's probably worth trying though what's the alternative for now?
Bill

The tech said that it might be defective but I am going to try cleaning the contacts first. It should not be cold under the settee...it should be warm if anything.

I wonder where one would get a new one? I am going to dig out all the manuals and see if I can find a part number.

I'll give you the view at the pool. It can be quite good.

He's only 11, in a couple of years he should get it. And based on his behavior as you've described it, it doesn't sound like you'll be bringing him back anytime soon anyway. :-)

Good luck with the A/C.

Doc, my Digital Elites I had on my previous boat were built into the displays, I installed external temp sensors in the return air vents so the units cycling temperature would be more accurate. If the external temp sensors went bad I could simply unplug them from the Marine Air main control board and set them back to internal instead of external temperature sensors. It sounds like your system is different.
Bill

Doc,

There is a local service tech who handles this area who is a crook, a liar and a thief, and I caught him red handed.

Documented it all and sent the certified stuff to Cruisair.

If you will send me a PM I'll provide you with the information, just please STAY AWAY from this clown.

To turn it back on I have to hit the cool button. Adjusting the thermostat up or down has no effect. It is like when you turn it off and only the temp shows.

Plenty of water flow. Both units use the same pump but each has its own over board discharge.

It has now run for 18 hours since the shutdown with no problems. This same thing happened once on my last week long trip.

There is a thermal switch on the compressor that could cause this problem but it will normally throw a code? When the AC shut down the last time was the boat moving or tied to the dock? I assume everyone else on the dock is running their AC units? Do both your AC units run off the same AC Main or are they on separate AC mains?
Bill

I ve had a compressor triggering it's built in over temp switch on my boat, it doesn't throw a code. I my case the display shows the compressor running light on and the blower is running. Then when the compressor has cooled it just restarts, Doubt that's the case here as the display appears to show that the system is off.

Check the contacts where the sensor wire plugs in the control board, often it s phone jack type which corrodes.

Make sure the probe is not pressed again the fins which will get real cold.

I still don't understand why it shuts down the whole system. Obviously the compressor woudl not come on but the blower should still been running

I am tempted to start a new thread called A/C Shutdown II but, except for the spoiled grandson part, we are here to learn.

I have relocated the probe to a 90 degree bulkhead about 2" out and 6" up from where it was attached to the lower left corner of the frame...almost touching the very thin filter which rests against the front of the condenser coil. My filters are not behind the return air grills but on the unit itself.

The manual says the probe may be anywhere in the return air passage but not touching the condenser coil. Mine may have been too close.

Unfortunately, the probe's cable disappears toward the back of the unit and it is not possible to clean the contacts without moving the whole thing.

The test of this change will have to wait until our next overnight trip which may be a few weeks.

I still may switch control panels. My SMX ir is the version with a small 1/2 door covering the buttons. I can't see how to remove it from the wall. I looked behind the bulkhead where it is mounted and there appear to be screws at the corners but they cannot be seen from the front. Something may snap off but I am afraid to try until I can talk to some who knows exactly how it is fastened.
